My Net# York
By JAMES ASWELL
NEW YOfUL —Small Talas: One
of Oeorge M. Cohan's faeorlte an-
ecdotes oonoerna a lunatic asylum
to which the Governor is interview-
ing a Una of patient*.
The first man to the line shout*:
Hello Governor I know you
well."
I "Who are you?” inquires the Head
Man.
“Why I am Napoleon Bonaparte.
Don't you reoognlae me?”
“Who told you you were Napo-
leon. sir?’’
"The Almighty told me!” the man
■aid firmly.
Whereupon the next man in line
piped up:
T never eaid any such thing.”

Jerry Cooper. Che song chanter
likes to befuddla hi* friend* with
this one:
There are one hundred socks to a
barrel. Fifty green and fifty red.
How many socks must a man. blind-
folded. pluck out of the barrel to be
absolutely sure ha ha* retrieved a
matched pair?
The trick to this one is that there
is no trick. It is so simple that pro-
fessional mathematicians have been
known to muff it.
Three socks must be lifted from
the barrel for the lifter to know he'
has a perfectly matched pair. Of
course you knew it all along! But
try it on your enemies.

Much gabble has erupted in the
public prints romantic and other-
wise. about the light* of New York.
Actually they are the feature of the
town which palls quickest. But on
oocaslon they can act up and fur-
nish diversion even for those who
must watch them blink night after
night.
One night recently i«>mpous po-
litico (what politico Isn’t? > was
scheduled to address a gathering in
the grand ballroom of the Hotel
Montclair. There was bulb trouble
that nUht and as the suckers gath-
ered to earbend they saw in large
light* a sign transf .ned instead
of Hotel Montclair the electric blurb
ren: "Hot.Air.”
Then there was the time within
the memory of the youngest native
when "These Three” was playing
at the Rivoli. This rather heavy
flicker bloomed into eccentric lights
one evening -a ”Te* Hee.” And there '
art* the gloomy Sunday when your 1
reporter took a turn on Broadway
and was astonished to find the
Paradise Cabaret electric banner
accustomed to spelling out "Never
a Cover Charge” reading "Eve.
Cover Charge." Of course you can
Imagine your own improvisations
on the notion of a cover charge for
Eve to. of all places.Paradise
