I • :■ "■
| Coaches Saiytjr .Sjinford and Joe
| . Abbey, were not t(jo pleased with
| ": ' the Plewboys' showing "at a scrim-
| . mage Friday,* afternoon.' , - -
I' "Of course,-fhe weather'was. Hot,
it was the, firbf .-djy of classes,, and-
' we had been goirigj-'prgtty hard all
.. week," Sanford'sa'icj.-"Maybe we'll
, . settle down this - week and round
into shape for our opening' game
Saturday night."
Coach Joe Abbey concentrated, on
improving .the defense in the
scrimmaging. One team included
Henry Miller at center, Bob Hard-
<sen and Ludie Bitner at guards,
Jimmy Bomar and Harry Cannon
a'c tackles,1 Bill Lutz and Bill
' Puryear at ends. Becks were Tom-
my Hudspeth at quarterback,
Walter Bryan at right half, Dick
Castleberry at full, and Guy Hill
at left half.
The other team was composed of
Norman towi-ie at center, Bates,
and Gregg McKenzie at guards,
Jerry Barber and Harry Sulteme-
ier at tackles, Giles Tippette and
"""""Bobby Peed at ends. The backfield
whs made up of Joe Bill For,
quarterback; Jack Richardson, full-
back; Franklin Earney, right half;
and Dan Stoldt, left half.
Maurice Hodges, freshman from
; ' Monahans, also worked as quarter-
back on both teams. All of the 40
squad members took part in the
scrimmage except Dudley, Car-
away who has a chipped tooth and
■ Bill Brown who injured his left
kiiee in Wednesday night's scrimm-
age.- Brown, a speedy halfback, is
exji6otevd to be in good shape by
Set;t.' 20 for the opening game
here- with Cisco.
.'ban • Stoldt, another promising-
halfback who has been troubled
with' a sprained allele, is now re-
covering sa'tifaetorily. Stoldt, al-
ong with Bill Puryear of "VVeather-
ford, is likely to see considerable
duty in kicldng extra points.
Both Coaches San-ford and Abbey
attended the Comanche-De Leon
game of Friday night, and the
Arlington Rebels-Cisco Wranglers
clash on Saturday night.
Regarding the Comanche and
DeLeon teams Coach Sanfoi'd said.
"Both teams have some good boys
that we would like to see come to
Tarleton," Sanford was particu-
larly high on Walter Johnson, De
Leon's 215-pound tailback, but
commented that Johnson would,
probably be recruited by a South-1
ffifs't Conference sciiool because of
his outstanding ability as a weight
Bian in track.
