VALLEY
(Continued trom Page One.)
Padre Island is favored with
the finest natural beach on the
west coast of the Gull of Mex-
ico.
The island is more than a hun-
dred miles long. Eventually a
road will be built along the beaca.
• • •
IT IS ESTIMATED THAT A
causeway would cost from
$400000 to $300000.
During the twenties it would
not have been difficult to fi-
nance such an undertaking it is
not so easy nowadays.
In addition to the causeway
tihe lull development of Padre
Island as a coast resort would
require large additional outlays.
Those would come once the
island is made available to the
public. Once a visit to Padre Is-
land was a lark. But a person
had to have a whole week-end
available to visit it.
A trip from Brownsville to old
Point Isabel on tne little Rio
Grande railroad trains. Some-
times the wood burners would fail
and visitors to the coast would
Ump into town in the wee sma
hours of of Monday morning.
Sailboats carried the visitors to
Padre Island. Sometimes calms
would delay them. Later gas en-
gine boats were used but they
were not always dependable.
MOWADAY8. WITH EXCEL-
lent highways and fast mo-
tors. persons from every’ pert of
the Valley can reach Port Isabel
in an hour and a half.
But there is still difficulty in
getting to Padre Island. It Is still
a slow trip by gasoline launch.
And the automobile must be left
behind
At Port Isabel they believe con-
struction of this causeway will
do much for that town and for
the Valley as a whole.
Especially as a tourist attrac-
tion for all the Valley.
And we agree with them
“Why if California had that
beach available they would spend
millions in Us development’ saya
Mr. Hunt.
And we agree with that.
The difficulty here is that the
Valley is In Texas not In Cali-
fornia.
Texas is a vast state. The men
who run the state government re-
gard the Valley from a voting
standpoint. And that vote is only
about 25.000. while the state as a
whole has more than a million.
In other words the Valley is
small potatoes in the great State
of Texas.
Some months ago it was report-
ed that a contract had been
awarded to build a causeway
across Laguna Madre at Flour
Bluff near Corpus Christi.
That's the last we’ve heard of
the project.
But if it’s still alive perhaps
those people could be induced to
do something about a causeway
at Port Isabel
Anyhow. Brownsville—and we
feel sure every other Valley uwn
will support any movement look-
ing to the building of such a fa-
cility at the coast
