New Yorkers Take 10
Games Out of I I
BY Jl'DSON BAILEY
Associated Pres* Sport* Writer
There 1* something catching
about the New York Yankees sp.r- |
it. I
They've already raptured fans’
imagination with a magnificent 1
drive that has bagged 10 victories
in their last 11 game* and they're i
liable to catch the Cleveland In-
dian* and the Detroit Tiger*. If the
latter club* -don't watch out.
In an entire stand against the
four Western division cluh*. the
only game the Yankees dropped
was a 1-0 squ<*ere-out to the Chi-
cago White Sox. They polished off
the St. Louts Browns 10-3 and
0-5. in a rioubleheader Thursday J
to show why they've been world
champion* four years.
IS Runs In One
They reeled off ten runs in one
inning to overwhelm the Browns
in the first game and In the sec-
cnd they rallied three times to |
triumph in the 13th.
With two out and two on In the
ninth. Joe DiMaggio. who had been
on the bench with a charley horse.

Prank Crosetti caught the Brown*
| ;es napping with a perfect bunt
down the third base line and
squeezed the winning run home.
The victory reduced the idle In-
dians' margin over them to 4T
games.
Senators Downed
It didn't get them closer to sec-
: end place however be.-ause the
|Tiger* mowed down the Washington
| Senators in a doubleheader 3-2
and 6-0. to advance within two
games of the lead.
Schoolbov Rowe doubled the de-
riding run across in the first game
for his 12th victory. Buck Newson
notched his 17th In the nightcap.
In the only other American
’eague game the Boston Red Box
were handed a 4-3 decision hv John-
nv Rignev. who walked Joe Cronin
with the bases loaded in the ninth.
The National league bunting has
hefn generally accorded to the
Cincinnati Reds but developments
Thursday came close to chnching
it.

I'm reaily. too. if they want me.**
A blanket draft of men m the
21 to 3d age group would just
about deplete the ranks off today's
big leagues. If all of them were
taken This of course. Is Improb-
able. #but some of the game's out-
standing performers undoubtedly
may go into uniform If the con-
scription bill Is enacted
Saved league*
Back In the World War Griffith
virtually sated the major and mi-
nor leagues from shutting down.
He did It b\ a long talk with Sec-
retary of War Baker but getting
the jump on the draft helped.
Under the direction of army ser-
geants all dT the big league teams
abandoned morning practice for
drills and then put on public drills
before every game.
‘They used bats instead of guns.**
said Griffith but let me tell you
they were in shape and readv and
had a four months start on the
lellows who hadn't been to camp.”
Griffith sa:d he recognized the
fact that conscription probably
would not Interfere with the 1940
baseball season but might changa
some plans for spring training and
the regular 19(1 arason.
