has already been made certain. Of all
the candidates, Harding was perhaps
the most objectionable to these two
elements. Prohibitionists call him a
trimmer who is neither for or against
prohibition enforcement.
When state after state was wheel-
ing to Harding’s support Saturday
the delegates had little idea what he
stood for. They will find out slowly,
for in his six years as senator, Hard-
ing has Uken no very definite stand
on anything. Many believe that
Harding ia for intervention in Mexico.
Speaking at San Antono shortly after
he was elected to the senate, Harding
said the United States ought to own
all the territory between the Rio
Grand and the Isthmus of Panama .

Aboard Newspaper Special, enroute
to San Francisco, June 13.—Discus-
sion tonight turned to effect upon pro-
gressive elements of the Republican
party of the nomination of a stand-
patter. The king and captains of the
old guard got their first choice when
it had generally come to be believed
that they would get their second choke
at the very best end the second choke
was Governor William C. Sproul.
Penrose wanted Harding and the
little Senate ring wanted him, and
they got him. But it is up to the
Progressives to say what they are
going to do with him.
No convention ever saw more gum
shoeing than the one at Chicago.
Discussing the maneuvering just be-
fore the nomination a New York dele-
gate said:
“If an eel were dropped from hea-
ven into this convention it would
think itself paralyzed when it saw the
action of some of the leaders.”
The outsiders at all time had the
strength to smash the senate ring, but
they failed to get together, and the
men who wanted Harding saw him
gradually come into a position where
all the delegates were willing to crowd
the stairway to the band wagon.
Dissatisfied Republicans are very
likely to lie low until it is decided who

Columbus, June 15.—Now that an
Ohioan has been chosen the standard
bearer of the Republican party, Ohio
Democrat* are redoubling their efforts
to obtain another honor for the Buck-
eye state by having Governor James
M. Cox selected by the San Francisco
convention as the one to. carry the
standard for their "party.
No sooner bad Senator Harding’s
nomination been assured than former
Governor Jame* E. Campbell, an Ohio
delegate-at-large to the Democratic
national convention, began prepara-
tion of a circular letter to all Demo-
eratie delegate* setting forth why
Governor Cox shouid be nominated at
the San Francisco convention.
“Governor James M. Cox can cerry
Ohio. What other candidate can
match this certainty with even a pro-
bbility," the letter declares.
