The first bale of this year’s Barri-
son county cotton was brought to
Hallsville Wednesday afternoon at
4:16 by Dave Buffman. The cotton
was raised on Mr. Buffman’s farm
west of Hallsville and was ginned by
Bss Brothers. The bale weighed 606
pounds and sold to B. J. T. Jones for
32 cents a pound. The business men of
Ballsville made up a purse of 914 and
presented it to Mr. Huffman as a pre-
mium.
Two other bales were also brought
to Hallsville last week by Mr. Huff-
man. one being brought there on Fri-
day and the other on Saturday. Mr.
Huffman stated that he expected to
make 20 bales this year. He stated,
however, that the cotton was mad
before the boll weevil got in its work.
Mr. Huffman estimated that some of
his cotton would run a bale to ten
acres, while a half bale to the acre
would be made on other portions of
his farm.
Corpus Christi, Texas, Aug. 23.—
Funding the big cotton crop of Nueces
county is a large undertaking requir-
ing millions of dollars. One Corpus
Christi bank during the first two
weeks of the season loaned farmers
more than half a million dollars in
cash to meet their preliminary ex-
penses before they could begin to mar-
ket their cotton. Between the three
banks here ovr a million and a quar-
ter dollars was loaned in the two
weeks period. Most of the money
was to pay pickers of whom there were
more than ten thousand in the dis-
trict contiguous to Corpus Christi.

Several automobiles loaded with

Station from Tatum and Beckville. A
joint meeting of the citizens of the
two counties will be held at the Fer-

plans for the erection of a bridge over

E. B. Hayes, chairman of the Cham-

stated yesterday that Tatum and
Beckville had a contest on as to
which one of the two places would
have the largest delegation present |
today. “This is only a slight example
of the spirit that is being manifested
by our neighbors for the erection of
the bridge which will bring thousands
of dollars to our city," said Mr. Hayes. I
