On another page of today’s Morning News will
be found an advertisement of Mr. P. C. Tucker,
County Road Superintendent, asking for bids to
maintain the roads under the Davidson patrol law.
The News very much favors this law and the
CommiMioners’ Court are givng it unqualified
support this year. The amount allowed is double
that of last year and ample bridge fund has also U°n, but it takes the United ^States three months
been set aside.
Mr .Tucker tells the News that bids will only
be considered from people directly interested in
us to place all on the altar.
“There was a time when intellect
ruled the world but now it’s the great
hearts that rule. Now more than ever

The other night down at Goose Creek a man
and a woman were kidnaped, taken to the woods
and fearfully beaten and crude oil rubbed into the
wounds of the man. All evidence shows that both
the man and the woman had good reputations.
The brave (?) men
act were dressed in women’s clothes.
Governor has not had time to denounce the deeds
of the masked and hooded bands that are 1
ing disgrace upon the state. Mr. Neff is devoting!
his energies towards the securing of a new con-
stitution for Texas. The present constitution has
considerable to say about certain rights a citizen
is supposed to have, among which is the sacred-
ness of his home, the protection of his person from
violence and the right of trial in the court house
for any crime he may be accused of.
Can it be that we are to leave the “Bill of
Rights” out of our new constitution? It’s a farce
to keep it there under the present plan of
enforcement.

In these latter days of invention and efficiency
we are likely to believe that there never was a
time when things could be done like we can do
them now. But the determination of the New
York Central to scrap the celebrated engine No. I
999, has brought out the fact that engine made
the world’s record on speed more than 35 years.
With Charley Hogan at the throttle the 999 pull-
ed the Empire Express from New Y’ork to Buffalo
at a speed that has never been equalled. On the
date of the fast run the train was late and Charley
Hogan maintained the terrific speed of 112 miles
per hour over the entire run. This speed has
never since that date been maintained for even
one hour on any road in the world. Along about
the time this record was made the railroads were
vieing against each other in the matter of speed
but two or three disasterous wrecks caused them | Irnperial Texas wa8 broke. The reason for this in-

I the investigation first started at Mer Rouge the
testimony showed that the men who kidnaped and
murdered Daniels and Richards wore black hoods.
At once Wizard Evans announced that it couldn’t

But as the investigation proceeded it developed
I that one member after another of the klan swore
that the black hood was the official regalia of the
organization when it went on a whipping or kid-

were bought from the headquarters of the klan
