THE J-TAC
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY "f; 1961
Wharton
on Plowboys
Her© Thursday Night
There's no place like home.
That's what Tarleton basketball
coach Don Campbell says and ac-
cording to, the statistics it is hard
to disagree with him. So far this
season the Plowboy cagers have
not lost a j game on their home
" court, but the road games they
have played are another story.
Starting out the season with seven
straight victories, four of them
„ in the . TSC ..gym, the Plowboys
looked like an unbeatable aggrega-
tion. Then they hit the road and
promptly lost .two out of three
conference games against south
Texas teams. They returned home
to take on the Hardin-Simmons
freshmen and got back in the win
column..' Then, back on the road
they dropped three in quick suc-
cession to McMurry "B", Howard
Payne "B" and San Angelo, the
last one.,a ronference game.
Out of Running
With three conference losses it
looks as-if the Plowboys are out
of the running for the -PC crown.
But Campbell said the team is not
going to forfeit . . . not with four
home games coming up.
The-four contests, all of them
with conference foes, will finish
out the Tarleton basketball sea-
son. With four straight victories
the Plows would have a chance at
the runner-up spot. It is still a
mathematical possibility for them
to win, but the probability is re-
moter.
Wharton Pioneers
Tarleton will take on high-rid-
ing Wharton County here Thurs-
day night. The Pioneers are the
odds-on'faVbrite -to wih'the crcnvn
following victory over San An-
gelo ; Saturday night.
Hardin-Simmons
Of .the la J,: four games played
the Plowboys have dropped three.
The only victory was over the
Hardin-Simmons Yearlings in the
Tarleton gym. The Tarleton squad
rapped-the Yearlings 86-55 as four
squad men, Marshall Proctor, Ken-
neth Black, Tom Heikkinen, and
Stan Levy hit in the double fig-
ures. Levy was the leading scorer

for the Plows with 21 points,
McMurry "B"
In another non-conference game,
the Tarleton cakers lost to an ex-
perienced McMurry "B" team, SC-
OT. It was the Plowboys' first
non-loop defeat of the season.
Freshman Tom Heikkinen was
high point man for the TSC squad
with 20 points. Marshall Proctor
and Ken Black each had 14 points.
Tarleton outscored McMurry in
the second half but could not make
enough to overcome the big' first
period lead.
Howard Payne "B"
In one of the closest and hard-
est fought games of the season,
the Howard-Payne five edged the
Plowboys 83-81, in Brownwood. It
was a real cliff-hanger of a game
that saw the score tied and chang-
ed with only seconds to go. H-P
freshman Dennis Watson dropped
a 30-foot shot through the basket
with only three seconds remain-
ing to end the hopes of the Plow-
boys. The Jackets held a narrow
edge in rebounding, 49-48, eighteen
of them pulled down by (3 ft. 5 inch
Danny Schmiech.
, San Angelo
The Plowboys made their third
unsuccessful bid for a conference
basketball victory Feb. 1, and fell
before a San Angelo Ram attack,
70-67. The loss virtually put the
Plowboys out of the running for
the crown.
The two teams were tied 30-all
at the1 half and at no time was
there more than a six point dif-
ference in the scores.
Marshall Proctor was high point
man for Tarleton with 21 points.
Ken Black had 17 and Tom Ileik-
kinen garnered 16.

Pioneers Grab Lead
in Conference Race
The Wharton County Pioneers
continue upward in their quest
of the Pioneer Conference basket-
ball crown as the season moves
past the halfway point. Boasting
a perfect 4-0 conference record,.
Coach Gene . Bahnsen's changes
will take on the Tarleton State
squad in Stephenville Thursday
night. The Plowboys will be the
underdogs, but • have the advan-
tage of playing on their own court.
They haven't lost a game at home
this season and are considered one
of the best, dedrensivs teams in the
league.
Wharton got past its greatest
opposition Saturday-^ night when
the Pioneers downed the. Ban An-
gelo Rams, 88r8§ in a double over-
time game. The teams -were tied
at 07 points each at the' end of
the, regulation- time and then tied
again, 75-75, at the end of the first-
overtime. Wharton's Bobby. Joe
Hill added 12 points .during the
overtime for a 86-point total and
high point honors,-
In other conference- action - this
week, San Angelo. will meet the
hapless Del Mar College Vikings
in Corpus Christi Monday night.
The Vikings have not wan a con-
ference game yet but boast the1
loop's highest scorer in Guard
Dick Cramer, who has a 27.0 per
.game average.
The Victoria Pirates, who de-
feated Del Mar,-82-71 last week,
will meet San Angelo in San An-
gelo Saturday.
TSC Trackmen
Are Running
As Season Opens
Track season at Tarleton State
will be under way Mon^y
coach O. H, Frazier announced to-
day. Regular workout schedules
are being set up to get the track-
sters in condition by the first meet
slated for early in March.
Coach Frazier's earlier apprais-
al of Tarle ton's track capabilities*
underwent revision last week
when several of his best' prospec-
tive athletes became scholastically
ineligible. The possibility of dupli-
cating last year's.performance and
winning the conference title ■ is
n<?t as good as it. was. However,
with a good bit of luck the TSC
thinclads could be in fox* the final
accounting.
One new hopeful for the squad
is Terry Moorehead of Houston.
Moorehead is a distance runner
with "good possibilities."
Barring more bad weather, the
Plowboys will be taking tlieii*
turns around the track almost
daily. Frazier said he is stilj look-
ing for a . few more men, to come
out for the team and urged, any
student with track potential, to
contact him or team captain;Jim
Love as soon as possible. .
