in a single location, this pile of
books is what the public
libraries of Texas can offer to
the Allen citizen with a need for
information or recreation.
National Library Week, April
16-22 can give you an excuse to
browse through Allen’s seg-
ment of that enormous state
book pile, so you may see what
we have to offer. “You’ve got a
Right to Read,” and “Reading
Makes the World Go Round”
are the dual themes of the
National Library Week cam-
paign, which has a state com-
mittee headed by U.S. Senator
Lloyd Bentsen.
The Texas State Library’s
most recent public library
statistics show that Texas
public libraries own 11,421,146
books to serve the state’s
eleven million inhabitants, the
same report shows that the
eleven and a half million books
were checked out some 32,185,-
146 times, each personin Texas
theoretically read almost 3
x library books during 1971.
The number of books in our
Allen Public Library almost
doubled in 1971; on January 1,
1971, we had 4597 books, and we
now have over 8800. Circulat-

Library Association’s annual
convention in Galvestion from
Wednesday through Saturday
last week.
There was a hectic schedule
of lectures, book talks, demon-
strations, exhibits, business
meetings, etc., and I hope that
I’ve come home with some
ideas for improving library
service to the people of Allen.
My daughter, Mrs. Cindy
Wolfe, ran the library during
my absence and I didn’t
get a chance to get all the
reports from her, so next
week’s column will carry the
word about donations, circula-
tion, new members, Story
Hour, etc.
Everybody is most cordially
invited to the open house at the
library next Sunday afternoon
ionfor 1971 was 5,921 books, an
average of over 212 books for
each citizen in the Allen area.
Actual per capita circulation
varies over the state, with quite
a few local factors influencing
the circulation rates. Populat-
ion characterisitcs, administ-
ration, program, location, book
collection size and budget size
all affect the success of a
library’s efforts to serve as an
active information and educat-
ional resource.
Despite personnel and money
shortages, Texas public librar-
ies do succeed in getting books
out to the citizens. Service
could be better, though, since
the state’s per capita library
income of $1.84 is only about
half of the $3.50 per capita
support level averaged by
major city libraries across
America. Alien’s tax support
last year, from city and county
taxes, averaged $1.96 per
capita, slightly above the state
average.
From all these reported
figures, apparently quite a few
Texans exercise their right to
read, and library and book use
do make their world go ’round a
little smoother.
I, along with almost 2,000
other librarians from all over
Texas, attended the Texas
