Dr. Dave N. Weaver will join
the headquarters staff of the
Texas Agricultural Extension
Service tomorrow as an agro-
nomist in cotton weed control.
Weaver will play a major role
in educational efforts directed
at cutting cotton production
costs through an effective weed
control program, said Dr. John
E. Hutchison, Extension Ser-
vice director, in announcing the
appointment of the agronomist
to the newly created position.
Weeds rob cotton producers of
extra profits each year and an
effective weed control program
is essential in the competitive
cotton industry, added the
director.
The agronomist will be work-
ing closely with Fred Elliott,
Extension cotton specialist and

It’s common knowledge that
when children don’t eat enough,
they don’t grow properly.
However, the reason for their
inadequate food intake is fre-
quently misunderstood, says
foods and nutrition specialist
Sally Springer.
“In certain circumstances,
nurses provided a high level of
fondling and handling and
social contact in the form of
talking and playing games. The
amount of food eaten under
these two types of mothering
was also the same.”
Miss Springer pointed out
that this is only one research

their status unless certain
requirements are met, points
out Dr. James Armstrong,
veterinarian with the Texas
Agricultural Extensionservice.
For a county to retain its
Modified-Certified status, the
following requirements must
be observed:
1. When a brucellosis reactor
is disc losed at slaughter, the
original herd from which the
reactor came must be quaran-
tined and a test date set.
2. Any dairy herd showing a
suspicious milk ring test will be
quarantined and blood tested at
the earliest opportunity.

CHECK FOR WORMS
Livestock and household pet
owners are reminded that
screwworms have returned to
Texas with a vengeance. They
should take all precautions to
reduce case numbers.

County Agent’s report
concerned, the demand for
heifers may be even more
startling in the next month or
so.
In recent years, cattle num-
bers have increased primarily
due to the increased demands
for feeder cattle by feedlots. In
1955 only about 10 million head
of cattle were fed in the 23
major feeding states compared
with 25.3 million head last year.
Furthermore, cattle feeding
should continue to grow.
Consumers are now demand-
ing grain finished cattle instead
of those finished on grass. In
other words, they are demand-
ing a higher quality of beef.
This can be illustrated by the
fact that 59 percent of all the
beef produced in the U.S. in
1970 graded USDA Choice while
back in 1955 only about onethird
was equivalent to that grade.
ERADICATION STRESSED
The scourge of brucellosis
still hangs over Texas, and
immediate action is needed to
“beef up” the testing program
so that the dreaded cattle
disease can be eradicated.
Although all Texas counties
are in the “Modified-Certified
statevide cotton weed control
program","noted Hutchison.
CATTLE TO INCREASE
Cattle numbers can be ex-
pected to increase again during
1972.
According to the latest fig-
ures from the Texas Crop and
Livestock Reporting Service,
major gains across the United
States in 1971 were in beef cow
numbers and beef heifers.
From January 1, 1971 to
January 1, 1972, beef cow
numbers increased about three
percent while beef heifers 500
pounds and over being kept for
cow replacements increased
six percent.
This holdback of heifers
emphasizes that the expansion
of beef herds is coming soon.
With spring just around the
corner and a generally good
outlook as far as grazing is

stimulation,” Miss Springer
said. ‘“Recent observations
have shown, however, that lack
of mothering by itesif doesn’t
cause physical stunting and
growth failure, unless adequate
food is withheld, or less
frequently, unless the child’s
appetite suffers.”
A recent research report
demonstrated that when in-
fants who had been subjected to
maternal deprivation in their
homes were fed as much as
they wanted to eat in the
hospital, the majority gained
weight at an accelerated rate.
The weight improved despite
the fact that the infants were
handled just as it was pre-
sumed they were handled at
home. That is, they were
isolated and understimulated.

Central Texas, recorded its
first case of the year this week,
and 28 different counties have
reported cases since the first of
April.
Before the screwworm erad-
ication program began in 1962,
southwestern livestock owners
suffered hundreds of millions of
dollars in livestock losses
annually. Since the program
has been underway, losses have
been kept to a minimum and
ranch workers have concen-
trated on other activities be-
sides checking for screwworm
cases.
“The time has come, how-
ever, when cooperation is again
needed from all livestock
owners and household pet
enthusiasts. Ideal weather
conditions and migrating fer-
tile flies are posing a threat to
all counties of the state.”
