Detergents can cause burned foliage under some conditions,
as can accumulations of dissolved salts. You’ll be best off to
pump a few extra gallons of new, fresh water for the lawn.
DEAR DOC: Would we harm our grass if we ran the washer
drain out onto the lawn? We have our own well and water is
pretty precious to us.
Ah, there’ll ne’er be another thing
That’s quite as great a sight,
As a lad holding to the string
Attached to his first kite.

4 MEASURING CUPS
I WALL RACK
I’m sure your tree won’t have any appreciable problems once
(if?) warm weather gets here. Willows are notorious about
leafing out early, and they often get nipped. But they seldom
have invested much vigor in these premature activities, and
regrowth soon follows.
DEAR DOC: How much does it hurt a tree to be frozen back
repeatedly? We have a weeping willow that’s been nipped three
times since late January.
It all depends on what you’re mowing. Hybrid bermudas and
even common bermuda will be cut with reel mowers. Reels cut
like scissors and are particularly good for short strands of fine
grasses. Rotaries, on the other hand, will handle taller grass
and weeds without stalling. Rotaries are a virtual necessity for
St. Augustine. Reels are somewhat safer while rotaries are
more easily sharpened.
If all this still doesn’t help in your choice, try to borrow one
of each mower type to use on your lawn a time or two. See
which you like best.
His gaze, was fixed up in the air,
And it was plain to see,
The dreams he dreamed were something rare
Molding his destiny. ,

With spring near at hand, bare-root rose season is just about
over and containr-grown season is just beginning. Either way,
prepare a bed that’s high in organic matter, say 50 percent peat
moss. Rosarians swear by raised beds, where soil is added to
10-12 inches above grade. Roost develop better with the
improved drainage and aeration.
Dig a hole large enough to accomodate the roots. For
bare-root bushes, build a cone of soil up in the bottom of the
hole for support. Place the bush so the bud union will end up
about 2 inches above the ground. Then put just enough soil in to
hold the plant, and soak the hole thoroughly. Finish filling and
soak again.
Prune the bush back to 8-12 inches, always to an outside bud.
And don’t fertilize the new plantings (except for root-promoting
phosphorus fertilizers) for some time.
