The U.S. General Services
Administration said today it
awarded 439 contracts worth
$49,831,990 to minority-owned
businesses in Fiscal 1973,
under special provisions of the
Small Business Apt.
The total includes 72 con-
tracts valued at $7,700,519 a-
warded in June, and represents
an increase of more than $15
million over minority assis-
tance contracts awarded by GSA
during Fiscal 1972.
Arthur F. Sampson, head of
GSA, said the action reflects
President Nixon’s efforts to
aid growth of minority busi-
nesses through Federal con-
tract awards. The minority as-
sistance program has helped
hundreds of firms owned by
economically or socially dis-
advantaged persons since
1969.”

Program so far has helped
almost 50,000 former service-
men purchas e tracts of land.
Since 1948, the state has loaned
$400 million to help Texas vet-
erans buy 3.5 million acres of
land.
Under the program the Vet-
erans Land Board buys a
minimum of 10 acres for the
veteran. He then pays for t.n
land in semi-annual instal-
ments for 40 years, although
the principal may be prepaid,
The maximum loan is $10,000
however, the veteran may pay
the difference in cash if the
tract costs more.
The veteran pays only five
and a half per cent interest on
the money. At today’s insterest
rates, that is a real bargain.
