Sunday, June 8, was a very

day was the surprise ap-

Learning can help older
people become better con-
sumers. They can make
better use of facilities
such as libraries and
museums, along with learn-
ing better nutrition, health
maintenance, and keeping
up with current legislation,
aret, music, religion or job
training.
Some learning programs
are operated entirely by
older people themselves or
older volunteers. In any
sizeable group of older
people, almost any talent
is likely to be available.
Learning is one of the
few abilities that can in-
crease even into old age.
But the key to continued
learning is that a person
must believe he can learn.
He must have developed the
habit of learning through-
out his life—then barring
some serious physical
disability such as deafness
or blindness, he will con-
tinue learning into very old
age.

Why all the talk nowadays
about learning and the older
person?
Because one of the
greatest resources of all
older Americans is the
individual capacity for con-
tinuing personal develop-
ment.
This is the critically
important factor for suc-
cess in many new ser-
vices for this age group.
Also, learning can make
adjustmehts to new life
styles easier and add ex-
hiliration to new leisure
interests.
Older people can learn
to care for their own
health problems and help
others in their group.
