TSC Suffers Hard Defeat
As Bearkats Gain Victory
Almost but not quite tells the
tale of the Texans venture into the
ranks of he Lone Star Conference.
Sam Houston State snuffed out
the soaring spirits of the Tarle-
tonites Saturday night with a last-
ditch field goal by Teddy Minyard,
Bearkat halfback.
The scoreboard returned a iinal
verdict of defeat for .the Texans
before an estimated crowd of 1200
fans at Memorial Field. The final
tally was 10-8.
Operating out of- the tough Lone
Star Conference, Sam Houston
fielded a bevy of hard-running
backs. The Texan defense disploy-
ed the same roek-ribber tenacity
that has been their hallmark for
the season as they repeatedly toss-
ed wrenches into the Bearkat of-
fensive machine.
For three quarters, the Bearkat
runners found the going to be
rather stickly as the greedy Tex-
an defense gobbed up four fum-
bles and two stray passes.

serious threat when Nestor .Rivera
bounced on a loose ball at the
Bearkat. nineteen. The tough Bear-
kat trenchmen forced the Texans
into a field goal try from the 26,
but the try by Robert Ruckert
went astray.
Then came the fourth quarter,
and the scoreboard began to light
up. Normon Peterson, Bearkat
quarterback, threw the Sam Hous-
ton machine into gear as he
sought out the. eager hands of Lc-
roy McAlister, a, halfback, on two
| yard-consuming passes.
| The Texan defense stiffened at
| the 26, and Minyard was forced
to try a field goal. Gary Grounds.
Texan tackle, got a mitt on the
ball and it fell short. Tarleton's
attempt to return met with dis-
aster 1 at the foar.
Pat Ballow's third down punt
from the two gave a dying gasp
and came to rest at the Texan
nine yard line.
KATS SCORE
Peterson slipped in from the
one on a third down effort after
an off-side penalty but the Bear-
kats on the four. Minyard kicked
the point for a 7-0 lead.
■A stormy drive by the Texans
stunned the Bearkats as the fans
went wild. Ballow's 27 yard
scramble highlighted the drive,
and a personal foul put the Tex-
ans at the Bearkat 19.
