Mr. Roosevelt’s children now In this
country and his relatives who are go-
ing to meet him will sacrifice several
hours of sleep for the sake of being
the first to greet the wayfarer. The
revenue cutter Manhattan, which will
take them to quarantine, will leave at
an hour not yet determined, depending
on the time when the Kaiserin Auguste
Victoria enters the harbor/ but in all
probability they must arise before
dawn.
Rear Admiral Leutze, commandant of
the Brooklyn Navy Yard, will command
the warships detailed to the naval pa-
rade. They will lead the line, with
the South. Carolina in advance, followed
by five torpedo-boat destroyers, two
revenue cutters, and four police-boats.
Then will come in twelve divisions the
fleet of chartered steamers reserved
by clubs from all over the country,
and the excursion steamers plying for
chance fares.

police boats will watch the water pa-
rade. In line there will be about 2,-
000 Spanish war veterans in addition
to the Roosevelt rough riders, bring-
ing the total number of soldiers and
police on guard to well over 6,000.
The soldiers are to act as Col. Roose-
velt’s escort and guard. The work of
the police will be to keep the crowd in
order, but they also will look to the
protection of all out-of-town visitors.
Four hundred detectives began to scour
the city last night for every crook they
could recognize. All those gathered in
will be placed under lock and key until
the celebration is over. To look after
those who have slipped through the
dragnet, other hundreds of detectives
will be constantly circulating through
the files on the sidewalks during the
parade.
The national volunteer emergency
service, of which Gen. E. S. Davis is at
the head, will look after that part of
the program.
IF DAY IS HOT.
If the day is hot, the scores of sur-
geons and nurses are sure to have their
hands full caring for cases of heat
prostration. Ample provisions have
been made for these emergencies. Not
only will there be ten land stations
along the line of march from the Bat-
tery to Central Park and Fifth avenue,
but a hospital-boat with a station at
Staten Island, will follow the river
parade. . Hospital tents and ambulances
will dot the streets wherever crowds
are greatest.

New York, June 17.—Theodore Roose-
velt will be guarded during the cele-
bration of his home-coming tomorrow
as carefully as if he were still in the
White House. The police are taking
unusual precautions. From the time
Roosevlt leaves the Kaiserin Auguste
Victoria at quarantine, ne will be
guarded by the keenest detectives on
the force. Some of the men will al-
ways be at his elbow, others will be
distributed among the crowds, watch-
ing for the least suspicious move.
Inspector Russell, head of the de-
tective bureau, will take personal
charge of the men. Police Commis-
sioner Baker today assigned sixteen
inspectors, forty-eight captains, 177
lieutenants, 170 sergeants, 4,100 patrol-
men and twenty surgeons to do duty
for the land parade. Another force, in
