dominated fine-up and just try to
build for next year. The second
choice was she and her team could
roll the dice and see where they
could go.
NT elected to take the second
option, which has the Lady Eagles
tied for first place in the east division
of the Big West, entering intradivi-
sional play Thursday with a 2-2
record in conference. Overall the
Lady Eagles are 10-6, having
already matched the win total of
last year’s Big West tournament
qualifying team.
Slinker said that just using this
year to build for next was not an
option as in years past.
“We felt like this year we could
do well,” she said. “Immediately
the staff found solutions.”
The performance of the Lady
Eagles through the adversity has
been something that even Slinker
herself has found hard to believe.
“After losing Ashley and Shan-
non, I probably would not have
believed we would have done this
well,” she said.
The team right now is six wins
short of the 16 in 1989-90 that
Slinker had in her first year at NT
— her best season.
What has been special about this
year’s team is that after the Norris
and Stephenson injuries wasn't the
only time the team has faced adver-
sity.
Twice this year the Lady Eagles
have bounced back from two
straight losses to score wins to start
win streaks. That is remarkable,

“Last year there was a revenge
factor,” head coach Tina Slinker
said. “Now, there’s even more of
one.”

NT plays Boise State Sunday.
Much like NT, Boise State and
Idaho have lost to UC Santa Bar-
bara this season.
“Santa Barbara (11-3, 3-0) is
almost an automatic loss for other
teams,” Slinker said.
But UCSB is in the Western
Division of the conference, so NT
won’t have to worry about what the
Gauchos do until playoff time.

have to keep with them.”
NT will also be forced to over-
come New Mexico State’s home
court advantage. The Aggies won
their 13th straight home game before
a near sellout crowd Tuesday night.
“To win a game like this would be
a huge accomplishment. It would
turn the whole conference around,”
Williams said. “We aren’t intimidat-
ed even though they’re coming off
the great win last night [Tuesday].”
The Mean Green will return home
with a 7:35 p.m. game against Cal
Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday at
the Coliseum.
