Tuesday, March 30 was the'
target date set by the Young
Democrats ofTarleton State Col-
lege as D-Day for the chapter
and it was exactly that. Seven
members, one associate member
and one sponsor journeyed to the
state capital in an attempt to
test individual legislators and
other members of the state gov-
ernment.
The group met first with Gov-
ernor Preston Smith and then
observed appropriate legislation
in the House and Senate, The
YD's then proceeded to the real
heart of the visit--the intention
to discuss with certain legislators
the upcoming bill on the eigh-
teen-year-old vote in state elec-
tions.
Those visited were Reps. Joe
Hanna, Tommy Holmes, Mike
Moncrief and also Senators
Ralph Hall and J.P. Word. All
the legislators were quite cordial
and welcomed the group in for
discussion. According to Bill / field, Treasurer Glen Roberson,
Woods, the results were not as
good as expected in that Reps.
Hanna and Holmes were not
completely convinced in the val-
ue of the eighteen-year-old vote
nor for keeping the present tui-
tion-cost ceiling.
Rep. Mike Moncrief was quite
Publicity Director Bill Woods,
and Parliamentarian Greg.Dome.
Also attending were Jimmy Teti-
nison, V.C. Lyle and Faculty
Sponsor Mr. Charles LaRue.
The club also elected a dele-
gation to the, state convention.

sympathetic to the. group and
being a TSC-ex, was aware of
the financial problem of many
students attending .state-support-;
ed schools such as TSC. The
visit and conference in his of-
fice was very gratifying and ex-
tremely fruitful.
To end the day, the Young
Democrats had a conference with
Lt. Governor Ben Barnes and
found this conference the most
successful of the visit. Lt. Gov----
ernor Barnes pledged his effort
to either keeping the same. tui-(
tion or raising it to the lowest
possible amount, Lt Gov. Barnes
also was impressively favorable
to the eighteen-year-old vote.
The visit was made in con-
junction with an upcoming
Young Democrat Recruiting
Drive. Those making the trip
included newly elected officers
of the club: President Mike
Smiddy. Vice President Charles
