Tarleton Plowboy Record Broken by UCLJ^f
Every sports fun can tell you
about UCLA's phenomenal win
.streak that was recently shattered
by Notre Dani,e. After cruising
through 88 straight victories on,
the basketball court, the Bruins
were dealt a heartbreaking 71-70
deleat by Notre Dame.
But how many of you can
name the team that held the
world's record for I he most
consecutive wins in basketball

before UCLA established the new
mark with a (i7-52 decision over
Stanford'.'
In case you haven't iheard" by
now, that team was our own
Tarleton Slate Plowboys back in
the mid-thirties. The Plowboys, as
they were called back then,
streaked to 8 6 consecutive
victories under the guidance of
Head Coach W.J, Wisdom.
As you might know.'TSU's
outstanding 1.5 miNion' dollar
physical education facility is'
named in honor of Coach
Wisdom. Wisdom still supports the
Texans-he's been to many of
Tarleton's home games this
season.
But back to the win streak.
Tarleton was just a junior college
in those days, but in order to
establish the record. Wisdom and
his players played senior colleges
such as Hardin Simmons, Howard
Payne, and Texas Wesleyan, and
also some independent teams that
were composed of former stars
from the University of Texas.
TCU. ajid the like.
Sou III western Conference,
schools even refused' a Tarleton
challenge to face the Plowboys on
the court.
Many of the young men who
played under Coach Wisdom and
who helped establish the 86-game
murk later became stars at senior
Colleges. In fact, at one time, foiir
ex-Plowboys ^vvere starters for
Texas A&M and four former
Plowboys were starters. for the
University of Texas.-
Tarletojt Jlnally 'lost a
one-point contest to San Angelo,
a team they had beaten soundly
just the night before. Kumors
have it that the referees were out
to end the Plowboys win streak,'
and it appears they succeeded.
A comparison of the two
record-setters would be.
unfair-during part of the time"
when Tarleton was setting tli^iV"
win skein, the rules stated that
after each basket, the ball would
be brought back to center court, •
and a jump center would be held.
Walton would have a ball.with
that. But, at any rate, Tarleton
students can take pride in looking
back at the sports history of our
school-not many college students
can boast that UCLA just cracked
a record their school had owned
for the past thirty-five years.
