Open house held
for maintenance
Open house for Tarleton's new
maintenance building was held
Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
T ft e building is a
13,51O-square-foot metal and
brick construction which features
a sprinkler system for fire,
intercoms which connect all
offices, a compressed air system
for carpentry, and air
conditioning and electric repair
shops.
Construction of the new
building began in February as part
of a 20-year master plan for TSU.
The new building will hold an
administrative area, offices, a
radio base and filing warehouse, a
supplies storage area, workshops
for painting, grounds crews, air
conditioning painters and
maintenance for vehicles, and
other area maintenance for
carpenters, sheet metal work,
plumbing and electrical
work. Plans for the building
were approved in 1973 by the
Texas A&M Board.
Jim Foust, college engineer
since 1955, said that the building
will enable the maintenance
department to do a better job in
maintaining buildings and
grounds. When Foust came here,
there were only 100 tons of air
conditioning. At the present time,
there are over 2,000 tons in the
buildings on campus.
Willie Pipes, physical plant
superintendent, said the
department has 25 regular
employes plus from 10 to 12
part-time student helpers.
The general contractor of the
new' building was Leiskar
Construction Co. in Fort Worth.

New IE machine
diagnoses engines
by Susan McNeel
The Tarleton State University
industrial education auto
mechanics department has a new
piece of equipment which can
diagnose a sick engine.
The new equipment is an
Ignition Oscilloscope and Exhaust,
Infared Combustion Analyser.
The machine also has other
gauges and instruments to
completely detect any function or
disfunction of an engine.
"If it sneezes,. we know it,"
said Gary B. Harvey, instructor of
auto mechanics, referring to an
engine.
Harvey also said that the auto
mechanics course has been around
for a while, but it has not been
taught at TSU for the last couple
of years. "It is now getting a
tremendous shot in the arm, and
is being brought up to date with
new techniques," he said. He
pointed out the new equipment as
changes.
The machine 'is the first of
several other types of test
equipment that the auto
mechanics department will be
adding .to its program.
Any car will be worked on,, but
no one will use the facilities
except the students in the class,
Harvey said.
He emphasized that cars are
needed and anyone who wishes
his car to be worked on may bring
it in.
