Nursing homes seminar set
Tarleton State University and
the Stephenville Senior Citizens,
Inc., have .announced plans to
conduct a 40-hour workshop on
'.'Social Service and Activities
Programs in the Nursing Home.",
The workshop will consist of
40 contact hours, divided into
two 20-hour sessions, Nov. 19-20
and Dec. 5-6.
The program is designed for
newcomers to social service and
activities work.
Two areas will be emphasized:
(t1) understanding the resident and
his family, their capabilities and
limitations, behavioral and
psychological problems.; and (2)
techniques for successful
interviewing, record-keeping,
program building and evaluation.
In addition to group sessions,
various exhibits are planned for
participants. Tarleton's Dick
Smith Library will display
reference books and professional
journals, local arts and crafts
groups will display materials and
products, business firms will
provide displays of equipment and
supplies.
The workshop staff will be
from the TSU sociology faculty,
Texas Department_of Public
Welfare, and experienced nursing
home personnel.
Staff members are: Dr. Jack W.
Murray, associate professor of
social sciences, TSU; Charles
Hampton, MSW, instructor of
social welfare work, TSU; Barbara .
Williams, MSSW, consultant in
social work, Texas Department of--.
Public Welfare; Henry Adams, MA
owner and administrator of
Stanford Convalescent Homes,
Fort Worth; Moses Herrera, B.D.
Chaplain, Stanford Convalescent
Homes; Helen L. West, MA,
clinical psychologist, Presbyterian
Village, Dallas; and Mary Sue
Staig, MA, professor of
gerontology, TSU.
It was announced that
Continuing Education Units will
be awarded to participants who.
desire them. The Tarleton.
Registrar's Office will make a
permanent record of CEU's

The Tarleton Rodeo Club and
local merchants have donated a
"Tarleton State University Rodeo
Weekend" to the KERA-TV,
Channel 13, Auction. The auction
is now in pfogress and will
continue through Saturday.
The club has donated four
tickets to its NIRA rodeo
April 17-19. They will be
-auctioned two at a time and will
be for all three night
performances.
Along with the tickets will go
three nights lodging for two at
Ramada Inn, dinner at the Pizza
Place, chicken-fried steaks at Jake
and Dorothy's, dinner at the
Stephenville Dinner Club,, and free
admission to the rodeo dance. The
retail value of the entire package
is $110.
Channel 13 is an educational
television station and, like other
such television stations, it
operates on money received from
grants and donations. .It has ;no
commercials to generate revenue.
Channel 13 began selling
merchandise and the public
television concept in a week-long
televised auction Sunday. Today
and tomorrow the auction will
run from 6:30 p.m. to midnight.
Friday it will run from 4:30 to
midnight, and Saturday it will go
from noon until midnight.
Mrs. O.A. Grant, heading the
auction for the Stephenville areav
; said, "There will be something
auctioned from the Stephenville
area every night."
Among other things donated
from the Stephenville area are: a
painting by Mark Davis, TSU
instructor of art; a metal sculpture
by Dr. William Gehrmann, TSU
biology instructor; jewelry by
George Mingu.s; and clothes by
Dana's.
Also, Farmer's First National
Bank donated a lobster dinner for
six, which will be cooked by
James Ne.well, instructor of social
sciences at TSU. Fresh lobsters
will be flown in from Boston,

Eckert VP
Ernie Eckert of Mason was
elected vice president of the
-freshman class in a meeting held
Nov. 5.
Renee Berry of Granbury was
chosento serve as
secretary-reporter, and Kathi
Conway of Frankfurt, Germany,
will fill the position of treasurer.
Five senators were elected by
the class. Th„y are Juan
Hernandez of Ballinger, Luis
Martinez of Killeen, Chris Griffin
of Frisco, Cindy McEntire of
Conroe, and Beth Thompson of
Fort Worth.
Catherin Kimbrough of Haskell
and Mike Bohannan of Euless
were picked as Senate alternates.
