Unemployment pay provided
3 new aids available to vets

. There are now three more
benefits available for a. veteran
according to Frank Terrell,
Tarleton's Vet-Rep on campus.
The first is unemployment,
insurance for veterans. The
purpose of the program is to
provide a weekly income, paid by
the states, for a limited period of
time for veterans who qualify, to
help them meet basic needs while
searching for employment,Terrell'
said.
To file a cjaim,,vpterans should
go to the nearest sta.te
employment service office or
unemployment insurance claims
' office and register farr work. If a
> suitable job is not available, they
should apply for unemployment
insurance, Terrell said.' ' • ;
Veterans need their separation
forms DD-214, a*rtd Social
Security cards when they1 apply.
"Another program is the
Information and Referral Service.
This provides assistance for the
caller who needs help, or has a
serious problem the Veterans
^Administration cannot take care
of.
This program is for a desperate
situation where one has no money
for food or rent, or a veteran who
has left, a hospital but mUst stay in
the vicinity/ bu t has no place to
stay, or a language or ethnic
barrier-owe who does not trust
anyone not of his ow-n
background, Terrell said.
"There are . trained and
imaginative social workers...Who
will make an effort to relieve or
solve problems that would
otherwise riot be taken care of,"
he said.

Johanson named head
of bicentennial group
Dr. Lamar Johanson-,' head of
the biology department, was
elected Chairman of the
Stephenville Bicentennial
Committee at a noon luncheon of
the Stephenville Chamber of.
Commerce on Oct. 29.
Johanson, Gerald Cook,
manager of the Stephenville
Chamber of Commerce, and Dr.
Sue McGinity, chairman of the
Tarleton University ]Bicentennial[
Committee, attended a State
Bicentennial meeting yesterday in
Austin.
The chamber and the Tarleton
Committee are co-sponsoring a
slogan contest with cash prizes to
be awarded to the top three
winners.
Entries in the contest to find
an official Bicentennial slogan to
be used by the City of
Stephenville during its
Bicentennial-related activities will
be accepted until 5 p.m. Friday.
Any person who lives, works or
attends school in Erath County or
any Erath County group may
enter the contest. Each . slogan
entry must be typed or printed on
a 3x5 inch card. The entrant's
name, address and phone number
should appear on the back of the
card. Only one entry per person
or group will be accepted.
Prizes for the top three slogans
will be $25 for first, $15 for
second and $ 10 for third place
winner.
The meeting in Austin was held
in the Thompson Center
Auditorium on the UT campus
and was highlighted by speeches
by Gov. Dolph Briscoe and Texas
Atty. Gen. John Hill.

Number) deleted from their copy
of the form DD-214. The
addresses to write to may be
obtained from Terrell in Room
153 of the Science Building.
, Also, Congress recently
approved legislation increasing
va'rious education benefits.
Monthly benefits will be raised by
23 per cent, eligibility will be
extended to 45 months for an
undergraduate, and a $600 loan
" will be available for each year of
study. Terrell said the increased
amounts should start in January.

senators will also join the Senate
at its next meeting.
