Come plav the electron game
Game is not just a gamble
Most ol you heard the
following Barker's cry at last
week's Halloween Carnival.
"Come play the electron game.
Pick the two numbers in the
middle and win $5, Chances are
.25 each or 5 for $ 1
The Electron game was
sponsored by the Tarleton student
affiliate chapter of the American
Chemical Society
If you did not play, you should
have because the club gave away
$80 in priz.es and lost $20 thanks
to a $15 wipe-out on the last play
of the night.
For Jhe edification of those
who played or watched or just
wanted to learn, the Electron
Game is based on the idea that
alike poles of magnets'repel each
other.
The gieen pail had copper wire
wiapped around it and the corks
contained magnets. When the
polarity of the magnets was
changed by reversing the switch,
the magnets against the side of the
pail were forced to go toward
the center of the pail.
Because of the geometry of the
various magnetic fields, eight
magnets would form a circle
around the two magnets that were
near the center of the pail.
If you are not mathematically
inclined this means that the odds
are 45 to 1 against winrtung. By
giving the player 20 to J odds, it
was felt that the club would win
some money, but not an excessive
amount.
' Well, unfortunately, the
apparatus had a bias for certain
numbers so the club lost some
money.
