Russell Long earns doctor's degree Washington Fellowship
applications available
Russell iC- Long, assistant
professor of English, received his
Ph. D. from Texas A&M
University in August
commencement exercises.
Dr. Long is a native of Alpine
and received his B.S. degree in
English from Sul Ross State
University in 1966. He received
the M. A. degree from New
Mexico State University in 1967.
Prior to coming to Tarleton in
1969, Dr. Long was a teaching
assistant at New Msxico State in
1966 and associate professor at
Schreiner Institute at Kerrville
from 1967 to 1969.
He is currently serving as
president of the Tarleton chapter
.of the Texas Association of
College teachers.
Dr. Long and his wife, Elaine,
have one son, Mark. They reside
at 989 Frev Street.

The search for the 1978 Maid
of Cotton has officially begun, the
National Cotton Coun.cil
announced. '
Winner of the 1978 Selection,
to be held in Memphis, Tennessee
Dec. 28-29, will succeed Elien
Clark, Memphis, TN, as
ambassadress for the American
cotton industry. "
Now in its 40th, 'year, the
Selection is open to young women
between 19 and 23 who were born
in a cotton-producirig state or
who have maintained legal
residence in the Cotton Belt since
age seven or earlier. Applicants
also must be at least five feet five
inches tall, and have never been
married.
The new Maid will emphasize
cotton's continuing importance as
a major fiber and its developing
role as a significant protein
source. Her international tour will
include participation in major
public relations and cotton
promotion activities in Canada,
Europe, and the FarEast.
Domestic tour will include
appearances at Rotary Clubs in
. major metropolitan cities, and a
variety of activities in other areas.
Following completion of her
official tour next summer, the
1978 Maid will receive a $2,000
educational grant from the
National Cotton Council to
;pntinue her studies.
Application forms for entering
the Selection may be obtained
from the Council, P.O. Box 12285,
: Memphis, TN 38112. Deadline for
> submitting completed applications
and required photographs is
November 12.
Secretaries, and principal
members of the White House
staff, the Fellows participate in an
extensive seminar program
consisting of off-the-record
.sessions with top government and
private sector leaders, journalists,
scholars, and foreign officials.
The program is open to U.S.
citizens. Enployees of the Federal
government are not .eligible with
the exception of regular members
of the armed services. There is no
occupational restriction. Those
who have been selected have
included scholars, engineers,
corporate employees, academic
professors and administrators,
medical doctors, architects, local
public officials, lawyers,
oceanographers, a policeman, and
a symphony conductor.
Proven leadership, intellectual
and professional ability, high
motivation, and a committment
to community and nation are the
broad criteria employed in the
selection process.

obtained by sending a post card to
'Die President's Commission on
White House Fellowships,
Washington, D.C. 20415 or by
calling (202) 653-6263.
Requests for applications must
be postmarked no- later than
November 15,1977.
