Poll shows Democrats taking state
With state and national
elections coming up Tuesday,
surveyed voters have already
voiced many of their
preferences.
The first TEXAS
MONTHLY POLL, 1,000
telephone interviews of
registered voters. conducted
between September 29 and
October 7, 1978, reveals that the
Democratic Party candidates
were leading in each of the five
statewide races surveyed.
The most surprising result
of the first TEXAS MONTHLY
POLL is in the hotly contested
race for U.S. Senator. In that
race Congressman Bob Krueger
(D-New Braunfels) holds a slight
statewide lead-42.7 to 38.9
percent-over the incumbent,
..Republican Senator John Tower.
The POLL also asked voters to
indicate which candidates they
preferred in the race for
Railroad Commissioner,
Attorney General, Lieutenant
Governor, and Governor.
In the Railroad
Commissioner race, indecision
was a significant finding with
over 45 percent of those
surveyed preferring neither
50.8 to 14.4 percent lead over his
Republican challenger, 43-
year-old Dallas commodities
broder Gaylord Marshal. A
significant 34.4 percent of those
surveyed expressed hp
preference for either candidate.

Democrat John Poerner, 46, nor
his Republican opponent Jim
Lacy. Neverthless, three- term
state representative Poerner,
who was appointed to the
Commission earlier this yeaF,
leads 54-year-old Midldnd

TSU students to begin
program broadcasts
Speech bureau and journalism
students will broadcast a news
and interview program over
Warner Cable TV, channel six,
Fridays from. I2:I5 to 12:45 p.m.
beginning this week.
Students will videotape 10-15
minutes of TSU news followed
by a 10-15 minute interview of
faculty members or students.
"There is a lot of interest,"
said Tom Watson, Speech
Bureau' instructor. "There are
about 20 students from the
Speech Bureau and journalism
division participating so far. I
believe it will be good for TSU.
It will give the community an broadcast.
McMurry cancels school trip
opportunity to be informed
about the campus."
Students will learn all phases
of TV broadcast, including
camera operation, on-air
announcing, news writing and
other areas 'of production,
Watson said. Students will rotate
each week so they may
experience all phases of TV news
production.
A production committee
secures interviewees. TSU Coach
Buddy Fornes will be
interviewed Friday.- ,
Watson and Jim Whitfield,
journalism instructor, are
assisting students with the
McMurry College has
cancelled its all-school trip to
TSU, Nancy Golden, student-
body president, told the Student
Senate Monday.
The after-dinner game also
has been cancelled, she said, but
the after-game dance will be held
as scheduled.
Ms. Golden said McMurry
cancelled the trip because of
conflicts with on-carripus
activities earlier planned by
many organizations.
The senate selected C, M.
McGuire, president of
Stephenville Bank and Trust, as
Supporter of the Month for
November. McGuire is the
founder of the Texan Club and
was chairman of the Fund
raising Committee for
Homecoming floats.
Connie Brooks, Stephenville
senior, resigned as chairman of
the Public Relation Committee.
She begins student teaching in
Brownwood today.
Ms. Golden appointed Sandee
Lawry, Southlake junior, as ne
Public Relations Committee*
chairman.
The campaign, for
Attorney General pits two
Houston lawyers. Democrat
Mark White and Republican
Jim Baker, against each other.
White, 38-year-old former Texas
Secretary of State, fought; an
uphill battle last spring to win
the Democratic nomination
from former Texas Ho.use
Speaker Price Daniel, Jr. He
currently leads Baker,, a
48-year-old great-grandson of
the founder of Houston's
prestigious Baker & Botts law
firm, by a wide 38.6 to 22.5
percent, margin. A sizeable 38.9
percent of those polled were
undecided.
In .one of the costliest and
hottest contested races of the
campaign year. Democratic
nominee Bob Krueger, 43, has
gained a slight statewide lead
over incumbent Republican
. John Tower in his bid for the
U.S.. Senate seat. Tower, 53,
| who was the first Republican
Senator elected from Texas since
1870 when he won a special
| election in 1961, faces his first
, serious challenge for re-electjpn
; this year from the two-term U;S.
Representative from New
Braunfels. The POLL shows
Krueger leading Tower by a 42.7
to -38,9 percent edge, with a
critical 17.3 percent reported

the voters questioned expressed

candidate Luis Diaz de Leon.
Both Tower and Krueger are

solid lead over Republican

Democratic nomination from
incumbent Governor Dolph
Briscoe without a runoff in a
lively primary battle last spring.
He now enjoys a 44.8 to 33.7
percent margin over 6l-year-old
Qallas oil^ drilling executive and
former Deputy Secretary of
Defense Clements. Of those
surveyed, however, 21 percent
say they have not dedided on
either candidate.
