Letters to the editor
Halftime!
As a former football '
and now as a photographer,
M'time has. until recently, been
a necessary evil-something to fill
the empty space in the action
while i took a break from
playing or running up and down
the field taking pictures and
generally getting in the way.
Bands, cheerleaders and pep
squads or drill teams were just
unnecessary additions to the
game.
Well, last Saturday was a
pleasant surprise for me. As
Msiy Anne Yarbourough (sports
editor for the Empire-Tribune)
and I watched, intending to be
bored, I noticed something. This
bunch of people (the Texan
Band and the Texan Stars) is
really good. They seem to
enjoy-really enjoy-what they
are doing, and it shows in their
performance. The band, while
small in number, has an unusual
esprit de corps, and excellent
field general and good personnel.
The Stars always turn in a good
performance, but this year's
group seems to be the best of
the three years I have been at
TSU. As a whole, they seem to
be a more personable, energetic
and vivacious group than some
of those in the past. They have
the same polish that Texan Stars
have always had, but they seem
to have more enthusiasm than
usual.
Well done, band and
Stars-I'm impressed.
See there, every body-editors
can be nice, occasionally.
Renea's Ramblin's
Me and my roommate make
quite a team. No one thought
that there could be another
human being as absent minded
as me-that was before they met
Brenda. Between the two of us
it's one disaster after another.
For instance, the other day
Brenda was going to drive over
to the gym where she has a class.
But that was before she
remembered that she couldn't
remember where she had parked
her car.
I fust stood there and looked
back. There's not a whole lot
you can say at a time like that.
But then that's nothing. One
day when I was in high school I
rode the bus home as usual.
When my mother opened the
door she stood there for a
second and then asked, "Where's
the car?"
"Did you leave that car at
school?"
Well it wasn't as if I drove the
stupid thing every day. If I had,
I'm sure I would have
remembered to take it home
with me.
At least that time it was the
car I forgot and not my little
brother. A couple of years
earlier I'd gone
him at Safeway^
But then as
home and left
Brenda says,
"Even smart people have to goof
once in a while."

Perhaps the time has come.
The time to stop complaining
about homework and to start
doing it. It seems ironic that we
pay dearly to go to school in
terms of time and money, and
yet we complain about the
assignments we receive in pursuit
of knowledge. We as a group
seem to lack any motivating
force. Perhaps we are a product
of our era, or maybe our leaders
are not "dedicated" enough.
Dedicated in the sense that they
will not sacrifice their education
for someone else's ego trip.
Perhaps it is time that those
interested in improving this
institution begin working
together instead of pulling apart.
I my.self can be partically
blamed for many problems, but
I feel this blame can be equally
shared with others. Could
anyone possibly be interested in
having more weekepd activities?
If so, why does no one attempt,
to initiate any new programs?
Would anyone be interested in
some one day and possibly one
evening outdoors activities?
Would there be any interest in
regular card or games
tournaments? Does anyone
really care if we have a ski trip
set up? Please tell me if you have
any inclination either way.
I suppose I should climb
down from my soap box and
attempt to publicize a few
activities. For those of you who
are interested, we are having a
ski trip. It has been organized by
a national collegiate ski
association. This ski trip has two
factors working for it: one-it is
inexpensive, two-there will be
about 1000 other college age
students there {great place to
meet people). The only real
problem with it is that time is
running out for those who
would like to go. Unlike last
years trip this one is arranged so
that no matter how few decide
to go they will be able to go.
Also class meetings are
scheduled for September 30.
Homecoming activities will be
discussed. I encourage those of
you who have few obligations
for homecoming week to attend
these meetings.
I strongly feel that there are
five clubs on campus that should
be recognized for their support
at the Texan football games.
APO, GSS, Block and Bridle,
Cobbs, and DST demonstrated
how strongly we all should
support the remainder of our
athletic program. At the present
time it seems that few people
even know that we have a
women's volleyball team much
less how well they are doing.
Could it possibly be time to stop
complaining that there is
nothing to do and start using
your free pass to home sporting
events?

Dear Editor:
I've waited for three weeks to
see a commentary in the J-TAC
about the new Tarleton Center
wallpaper but it has been to no
avail.
Who's bright idea (no pun
intended) was it to put "Purple
Poo Paper" on the Center Walls?
Granted it does wake me up at 9
in the morning. I walk through
the newly redecorated entrance
area of the SUB on my way to
the plushly furnished lounge and
I hear all types of remarks about
our "New Wave" wallpaper.
As one faculty member told
me in class, "It looks like they
Homecoming
The TSU Student: Senate
announced Monday that the
t h em e for this year's
Homecoming would be "Catch
the Texas Fever, ." Kevin
Mondon, student body president
said,
pasted old book covers across
the wall!"
T-CAB has made an excellent
start at improving the SUB and I
want to thank them, but can't
something be done about this
gaudy wallpaper? "Poo Purple"
looks great on the football field
but not in the lounge which is
decorated in earth tones of
brown, beige, and yellow.
The design of the campus
gates and TSU symbol" on the
wallpaper is impressive but the
color makes the whole area look
very cheap. It is good school
spirit—this color purple-and
would look much better in other
areas on campus such as the
gameroom, the dorm Tobbies,
the cafeteria, or even Dr,
Trogden's office-nqt jrv the SUB
entrance.
T-CAB has over $60,000 by
now from charging the students
$10.00 per semester for the
Improvements. Perhaps they can
alot a few hundred more to get
this color off the Center walls. It
certainly would help me sleep a
bit longer in my 10:00 class!
