TSU footballers ready to go
The TSU Texans are sporting a
hew slogan this year - "Hit and
Run in '81" - and are hoping to
"bushwhack" many of their grid
opponents this fall.
Head football coach Buddy
Fornes says he expects the TSU
team to be very competitive this
fall, although he is still somewhat
concerned about the defensive
line. "We've got some talented
young men who are young and in-
experienced," he said. "It will be
the coaches' job to teach them as
quickly as possible."
Fornes said he'll be surprised
and disappointed if returning
tailback Ricky Bush doesn't rush
for 1500 yards this year. Bush, a
junior from Waco, led the league
in rushing last year with 984
yards on 201 carriesTThe 5'10",
185-pound speedster is the first
Tarleton back in history to rush
for more than 200 yards in suc-
cessive games (206 vs. Sul Ross
and 201 vs. Lubbock Christian
last year).
But Fornes isn't relying on a
one-man effort. Lary Fowler, a
returning linebacker from
Killeen, is another bright spot on
the team. The 6'2", 220-pound
junior was the leading tackier on
the defense last year, with 67.
Because Fowler has such a
reputation as a hard tackier, lie's
earned the nickname "Bam
Bam." "He's been on a condi-
tioning program through the
summer," Fornes said. "He'll be
ready to play."
Greg Gilbert, the center, is one
of "the hardest workers on the
team, according to Fornes. The
6'2", 205-pound Stephenville
junior is said to be versatile
enough to play any position on the
offensive line. "He is likely to
become the best offensive center
in the conference," Fornes com-
mented.
Senior offensive tackle Tony
Martinez, a 6'1", 230-pound team
leader, is being looked to as a key
blocker in opening holes for Bush,
as well as an able drop-back
blocker on passing plays.
Junior cornerback Lance Trin-
que is a key member of what
should be an outstanding defen-
sive backfield this year. At 5'11",
180 pounds, Trinque is fast,
game-wise and strong - pound
for pound, the strongest man on
the team. He's particularly good
in supporting against running
plays, as shown by his 15 solo
tackles last year.
At quarterback, Fornes has
what's been called "a pheasant
problem" - two outstanding
players trying for the starting
quarterback job. Bill Bayless, 6'
and 185 pounds, is a junior who is
transferring here from Cisco
Junior College. Kevin Petty,
5'11" and 185 pounds, is a second-
semester freshman transferring
from Baylor University.
"I would feel confident starting
either player," Fornes said. "It
will be interesting to see who
moves out front and becomes the
starter."
Bayless is a former all-district
and all-East Texas player out of
Westwood High School in
Palestine. Petty earned all-
district and Super Centex honors
playing at La Vega High in Waco.
Fornes said he's looking at the
best bunch of freshman recruits
he's had in a number of years.
Fornes mentioned, incoming
freshman Ricky Coulson, who
plays quarterback and safety, as
one example. Coulson is 6'1", 175
pounds, with 4.6 speed for 40
yards. "We feel sure Ricky will
find a starting position
somewhere on the team," Fornes
said.
Fornes is also optimistic about
Jimmy Walker, an offensive
guard; David Creek, a quarter-
back from Sonora who made the
"All-West Texas Super Team";
Mike Loven, an offensive tackle
who stands 6*3" and weighs 251;
and Chad Johnson, a 6', 225-pound
offensive guard.
To complement the skills of his
new-look team, Fornes has in-
stalled a new offense based on the
"pro I" formation. The forma-
tion uses two wide receivers to
give the offense a strong passing
threat. Fornes says the offense
will be looking to throw first and
run second.
If the new passing game is as
good as Fornes hopes it will be, it
will force defenses to stop keying
on Bush. Although Bush may ac-
tually carry the ball less, his
yards-per-carry should go up
sharply.
The Texans started fall prac-
tices Aug. 23, Their first game is
Sept. 12 when they play the Trini-
ty Tigers in San Antonio. The
game may give TSU sports fans a
good taste of what the
"bushwhacking" Texans can do,
Fornes hopes so.

Across from TSU
The TSU women's volley-
ball team will have a new
coach this year, Judy
Alexander of Stephenville.
Alexander is a 1980 grad-
uate of TSU with a
bachelor's degree in
physical education.
Since January, Alexander
has worked with infants
at Pecan Valley Mental
Health-Mental Retardation
Center. She will continue
working there while
coaching part-time. Her
husband is also employed
at Pecan Valley MHMR.
"We have a few exper-
ienced players returning
from last year's team,"
said Alexander, "but we
also have a lot of young
talent that I'm excited
about."
Team tryouts are underway
now at Wisdom Gym.
There will be 12 women
on the team, so
Alexander expects to have
to cut a few players
from the squad.
Originally from Levelland,
the new coach played
volleyball for South Plains
Junior College before
coming to Tarleton.
Positions on., the team
are still available,
according to Alexander,
and women who are
interested in trying out
are encouraged to do so.
Following the football
players' 12-minute run on
Aug. 23, which the coaches
consider a good indicator of
the team's fitness level,
head football coach Buddy
Fornes declared himself
"satisfied" with the team's
performance.
Fornes had 94 able-
bodied athletes on the first
day of this year's football
camp, 48 upperclassmen
and 46 freshmen. Only six
of the 96 failed to run the re-
quired minimum of six laps
around the field in 12
minutes. Six laps is approx-
imately a mile and a half.
The Texans have been
holding two-a-day prac-
tices every day at 3:30 and
8:30 p.m., and had an intra-
squad scrimmage at 9 a.m.
Saturday.
Sports director wins
national awards
During the summer, it
was announced that Reed
Richmond, sports informa-
tion director at TSU, cap-
tured three national
awards for excellence in
his field for the 1980-81
sports year.
Riehmond took first
place among National
Association of Inter-
collegiate Athletics Divi-
sion n entries for his 1980
Tarleton football press
guide. This is the second
time Richmond has earned
a first-place award in an
NAIA contest.
In addition, Richmond's
1980-81 Texan-Texann
press guide took third in
the nation among 525 NAIA
institutions. The award
marks the 12th such NAIA
honor Richmond has won
since he started working as
a sports information direc-
tor his freshman year at
Findlay College in Ohio.
Richmond's third honor
for the past year was a
fourth-place basketball
schedule poster.
Richmond, a 1979
graduate of Findlay Col-
lege, is beginning his third
year as sports information
director at TSU.
