Ardmore, March 15.__The
court room of the Hamon trial
was ordered cleared today af-
ter applause greeting the state-
ment of W. P. McLean, counsel
'for the defense, attacking the
remark made by H. H. Brown,
state counsel, wherhe referred
to defendant’s mother as "an
old woman.” Clara and her
mother broke into tears and
Clara was led from the court
room, tears streaming from her
eyes. In the furore created an
attempt was made to clear the
। court room, but several minutes
after the order not a score of
persons departed. Some effort
was made to exclude the press
but the bench ruled the press
could remain. Court adjourned
for one hour, from 10 to 11, af-
ter attorneys made explanation
of their remarks, which created
the furore. McLean, who prior
to Erown's remarks, said he
wanted the jury to know how
the entire Smith family "took”
the association of Ciara and
Colonel Hamon. “That old
woman, as he calls her, will be
on the witness stand and can
testify, and she is, in my judg-
ment, as good a woman as has
given birth to any lawyer in this
case, McLean said. The court
finally reversed itself in regard
to clearing the room but spec-
tators were given warning.
Clara’s mother later went on .
the stand. She testified. She
prayed when she first learned
of Clara’s relations with Ham-
on. She said Hamon once told
her he expected to marry her
daughter some day if he could
get a divorce. She said Mrs.
