School closing
plan explained
Bad weather and related condi-
tions force the schools to close
occasionally. Patrons are advised
to listen to the radio stations
WBAP, KBOX, and KRLD as the
primary stations. Other radio and
television stations will be notified
when time permits.
“We will make decisions on
closing as early as possible.
Unless notified otherwise over the
media, students and parents
should assume school will open at
i regular time,” advises Dr. John
Horn, Superintendent of Allen

Allen’s fame is spreading.
Cindy Allen of Fort Smith,
Arkansas, was on vacation and
stopped in at an antique shop in
Pueblo, Colorado, recently and
came across a cup sold by the
Allen Jaycees to comemmorate
the city’s centennial in 1976.
The cup was emblazoned with
the city’s emblem and so on.
Cindy sent the cup as a
Christmas gift to her friend, Lani
Hilz, of Allen. Lani, who has lived
here about a year and a half,
couldn’t believe the cup had
shown up in Colorado.
Probably some local Jaycee got
caught in Pueblo without any
money and had to pawn the cup to
make ends meet.

I realize that this may sound
strange or radical or even un-
American, but sometimes I think
that football is a bit overempha-
sized in our society. Now, it’s not
that I’m anti-football. On the
contrary, I admit that I’m a big
fan of high school and college
football. And I must confess that
I have watched the pros play on
television on occasion. In fact,
I’m rather proud of the fact that
I’ve seen every Super Bowl ever
played. Dispite the fact that many
people claim that the game is
being overexposed on television,
this doesn’t particularly bother
me. Those who don’t want to
watch football on the tube are
certainly free to turn it off.

the excess pressure to perform.
Yet, dispite these warnings, Jun-

sters age 9 to 12 has flourished. In
my mind, I wasn’t too excited
about Junior Leagues, but I
wasn’t all that concerned either.
Then, last month, I read an
article in Newsweek reporting on a
PeeWee League in Cobb County,
Georgia for five and six year-olds.
The youngsters in the league are
outfitted with helmets, pads and
uniforms. They are cheered on by
their proud parents and a bevy of
six year-old cheerleaders.
Although the program has re-
ceived some criticism, its advo-
cates maintain that the competi-
tion is good for the youngsters.

for even younger children will be

will be, no doubt, a Toddler
League for one and two year-olds.
When the Toddler League is
organized, I’m certain that sev-
eral of the standard rules will have
to be altered to compensate for the,
unusually young age of the parti-
cipants. For example:
1. The game'will be divided into
four, conventional quarters. Each
quarter will be eight minutes long.
Halftime will be two hours in
duration sb as to allow partici-
pants to take a nap.
2. Instead of a standard football,
the ball used in the Toddler
League will be designed to look
like a Teddy Bear.
3. Only those participants who
have learned to count to five will
be allowed to play quarterback.
4. Only those participants who
have stopped sucking their
thumbs will be allowed to play
halfback or fullback.
