Great numbers of orders for bird ]
seed and feeders are coming in to 1
the Heard Museum in its mid- :
winter Bird Seed Savings Day 1
promtion, according to Dr. Har- ’
old Laughlin, Administrative •
Director. Bird Seed Savings Day
(BSSD) is a cooperative effort of •
over 100 nature centers and other 1
organizations throughout the 1
eastern U.S. to encourage back •
yard bird feeding and help raise
funds for the sponsors.
The deadline for placing BSSD
Orders is Saturday, January 13,
Laughlin noted. Orders for seed
and feeders may be placed by
phone, by mail or in person up to 5
p.m. on the 13th. Purchases must
then be picked up at the museum
on Bird Seed Savings Day, Jan-
uary 27.

“We do not have seed on hand
now,” Laughlin emphasized, “and
no place to store it for long.” The
museum expects the volume of
seed handled in this BSSD to
exceed 25,000 pounds. The only
way the museum can operate a
sale of this magnitude, he explain-
ed is to take orders ahead of time,

receive the seed in one large
shipment, and move it out within
a few days. “The room which we
use is otherwise an exhibit room,
and we cannot tie it up indefinite-
ly,” Laughlin said.
Purchasers must pick up then-
orders in person, or have a friend
pick them up: the museum cannot
mail orders. A late pickup charge
of $2 will be added to each order

for asthma.
If a person has such lungs, many
things can trigger an attack.
Lung infections, vigorous exer-
cise, emotional stress, strong
fumes and cold air can be culprits,
according to an article in the
wE
#, The breath-taking progression
from sneeze to wheeze to a frantic
gasp for air is a quick transition
for many people with asthma.
But asthmatics and potential
victims can breathe easier about
ey this possibly fatal problem if they
• get prompt, early medical treat-
ment. Controlling allergy is good
preventive treatment since allergy
leads to asthma in many cases.
One estimate says 40 percent of
people with nasal allergy ulti-
g mately get asthma to some de-
% gree. The same irritants that
cause a runny, stuffy nose make
the lung lining do the same thing.
This lung congestion can cause
the coughing, wheezing and
shortness of breath characteristic
g of most asthma attacks. Some-
M times inherited factors or body
make-up also give a person the
overly sensitive lungs necessary
