Violence article
was 'senseless'
Concerning the article "Corpora-
tions promote violence against
men":
Sine-Aid, Pedia-Care, OB Tam-
pons, Stayfree, Band-Aid, Reach
'toothbrushes, Medipren, and
Johnson and Johnson are not pro-
moting spouse abuse. What they are
doing is donating money to battered
women's shelters. Are you implying
that people who donate money to say
. welfare are in effect promoting
jobless people? While this' is pro-
bably an unfair analogy, it points out
the senselessness of your argument.
If vye help out a shelter, we are not
encouraging the cause of it. So no,
the charge of promoting domestic
violence doesn't fit.
Furthermore you stated, "And
each of the products singled out
woijien for help . . . and
systematically excluded men."
Where do you base this? I'm sure
there are battered husbands, just as
there are battered wives and
children. I'm sure that if there were
shelters for abused husbands, as for
wives and children, there would be
drives and donations for them. But
there isn't, so does that mean we are
not to help out battered women's
shelters? '
You go on to say "Before 1975 no
one knew much about family
violence, so we could go about the
business of 'sex and valor' quite
innocently."
Lastly, you stated, "We want
them and others to understand that
if children (boys and girls) learn bat-
tering from their parents, then by
focusing exclusively on battered
women, and excluding men, we are
insuring that no acceptible solution
will be found to our nation's batter-
ing problem. In fact it will get
worse."
My reply to this is that we have
to start somewhere. I seriously doubt
it . will get worse. And if it does,
sometimes things must get worse
before they get better.
And my plea to you is this — don't
rip up your race ticket before the
race is over. Because the race for
battered people has only began.

Corporate charge totally unfounded
Dear Editor,
I wish to strongly object to, and
heartily disagree with, the article
1 ^Corporations Promote Violence
Against Men," by Tom Williamson
which appeared in the March 3 issue
of the J-TAC.
According to the article, more
than half of the victims of a spouse
abuse survey reported in the Social
Work magazine were men. The ar-
ticle went on to report "... we havei
been given a deliberately false ifn-'"
pression of family violence byi
political interests that place men in
a position of increased legal and
social defenselessness."
i i
Personally, as a Social Work ma-
jor who plans on specializing in the
area of family violence, I cannot
"buy" this report. I assure you that
the women and children from these
violent homes, by and large, are not
interested in political interests; it is
the results of the violence that
disturbs them severely. But, even if
we were to accept the results of this
one particular survey, I feel that the
charges made by Mr. Williamson
against Corporate America were
totally unfounded. He accused these
firms of promoting domestic
violence against men because they
are making donations to shelters for
. battered women and children. I
simp|y do not see'any foundation for
this judgement. I do agree that bat-
tered men also need help. But I can-
not agree that by aiding battered
women, that anyone is promoting
violence to men. Satistics can verify
that often when men are the victims
of weaponry it is done by the abus-
ed women in self-defense, and I am
curious as to whether that fact was
taken into consideration in the
survey which was reported in the
magazine article.
As anyone who studies the horen-
dous damage done by family
violence can confirm, the entire
family needs help, regardless of
gender. I suggest that we pull
together to aid all the victims, not
throw verbal bricks at the portion of
Corporate America who are making
an effort to help alleviate this'na-
tional problem. And I for one,i am
very grateful for the interest and help
of Sine-Aid, Pedia-Care, OB Tam-
pons, Stayfree, Band-Aid , Reach
toothbrushes, Medipren, and
Johnson & Johnson's baby powder
and shampoo.
Thank you for the chance to express
my opinion,

Who is your favorite Presidential candidate and why?

Jesse Jackson. He advocates
money taken from the defense and
puts it towards education, and God
knows, the educational system needs
help.

I don't like any of the candidates.
It I had to select anyone, it would be
George Bush. He appears to be the
most knowledgable. None of them
appear to have the people at heart.

Enrollment emphasis
shortchanges student
My first year at Tarleton I was im-
pressed by the university's desire to
meet the needs of its students. More
and more, however,, I see Tarleton
becoming interested in maximizing
its_enrollment numbers, even at the
expense of its current students. In
my opinion, bigger is not always bet-
ter, especially if Tarleton is not will-
ing to keep its facilities in pace with
its enrollment.
Take the gymnasium facilities for
example. Wisdom Gym has four
racquetball courts, and Tarleton had
a fall enrollment of 5,200 students.
Wisdom Gym has a free weight
room the size of that of a 3A high
school. While most universities haVe
separate facilities for their varsity
players and regular students,
Tarleton's very small free weight
room must be shared by weight lif-
ting classes, the baseball team, the
basketball team, the football team,
and any regular students who wish
to lift. Although these regular
students have paid $90 student ser-
vices fees to use Tarleton facilities,
they are only allowed to do so dur-
ing limited, often inconvenient
times.
To make matters worse/Wisdom
Gym is often closed to its own
students in order to faciliate area
high school basketball games and
tournaments. Case in point, Wisdom
Gym was closed both Friday and
Saturday nights, March 4 and 5, for
a UIL basketball tournament. Ad-
mittedly, competitions held at
Wisdom Gym expose our campus to
perspective students, i.e. high school
seniors. But why should we be con-
cerned with boosting enrollment
when Tarleton is not presently
meeting the needs of its students?
A gym facility that is not utilized
by varsity players on a regular basis
is the swimming pool. The few
regular students who do depend on
the pool for their daily workout have
been faced with prolonged closings
due to repair work that supposedly '
could not be completed over the
Thanksgiving holidays or the four
weeks of Christmas vacation. It is
my bet that the work on the diving
well of the pool will be completed
just in time for the spring and sum-
mer months when public attendance
is up and revenue can be taken in.
I feel that Tarleton did not put the
pool's repair high on its list of
priorities because during the fall and
winter months, it was a- facility
utilized by a relatively small number
of students. Unless a facility can be
used to recruit students or take in
money, its importance to a handful
of students who pay to go to school
here is overlooked.
It is not my belief that Tarleton has
deliberately fallen short of meeting
the needs of some of its students. It
is my belief, however, that special
care must be taken to preserve
Tarleton's ability to adequately pro-
vide education and recreation to all
of its students, whether that means
limiting enrollment or. expanding
facilities.

Ask
Dr. Ruth
Q. What qualifies a woman as a
nymphomaniac? I'm not asking
out of idle curiosity — my girl-
friend has never, ever said no to
me in over two years. Would you
call her a case of nymphomania?
A. Not me — I never called any
woman that, because the word is
meaningless to me. You may like to
think of her that way — it makes you
feel proud and lucky, like the man
whose girl is pretty and good-
natured and fun and never makes
him jealous and also owns a golf
course. If it gives you pleasure to
think how much your girlfriend likes
sex, and how you seem to have that
wonderful girlfriend all to yourself,
that may be the nicest use of the
word nymphomaniac I ever heard.
All too often a man calls a woman
that because she likes a lot more sex
than he does, or wants more out of
the sex they share. One man calls a
woman a nympho because she
wants sex several times a night,
another because she would like sex
twice a week, another because sex
every single month seems . outra-
geous to him. Women have been
called nymphos because they don't
have orgasms and want to have
them. There is almost nothing but
unfairness in the use of that unhelp-
ful word.
The word has no usage in psy-
chosexua! therapy. Sometimes in my
practice I have a couple with
different levels of sexual appetite. If
the wife wants more sex, that
doesn't make her a nymphomaniac
but a woman who has to work out a
loving arrangement with her man.
There is no "normal" number of
times to have sex in a month /or in a
marriage.
And I have this to say — don't
start asking her more and more
often in order to find out if she will J
ever say no! Don't push your luck.
Don't spoil your good fortune by
turning it into grinding research! So
far as I can see, you are a lucky guy,
the only cloud being that sometime
she will say no and then you have to
understand, for the first time, what
other lovers l^arti sooner — that
everybody has the right to say no
without the sky falling.
Q. My fiance wants sex all the
time but I don't. What should I do?
A. That's a tough question!; You
might give this fiance to someone else
Who likes sex more. Or, if you really
want to keep him, and do like sex
sometimes, explain to him that many
couples have one partner who wants
sex daily and one who needs it
weekly or now and then. Tell him
sometimes you will give him ,a
wonderful session worth $1,000 in the
fantasy hotel of his wildest imagining.
He will be the king, you the slave —
you will massage him, bathe him,
wash his hair, powder him, drop
seedless grapes in his mouth and
pleasure him — just not get aroused
yourself. .
