Back at work
As Allen grows, so grows the churches. But workmen at
the First United Methodist Church had been snowbound
for several weeks this winter, halting work on the church
expansion program. When normal weather returned, the
crew happily returned to the job.

Jaycees are planning another of to Charles Akin, project chair-

The event will be held March. Akin is urging local citizens to
10-11-12 at Allen Plaza, according start saving items which can be
sold at the rummage sale. Items
generally sold in a garage sale are
particularly needed, Akin says.
Those who have items they
would like picked up to be used in
the sale should call 727-5531.
“Jaycees used a city-wide garage
sale as their first project in history
when the organization was found-
ed 6 years ago,” Akin said. “We
raised over $1,000 on that sale and
put the money right back into the
community in various ways.”
Jaycee projects have included
taking the leadership in develop-
ing 2 city parks, starting a
community blood bank, providing
$200 for a scholarship for an
outstanding Allen High School
graduate, choosing a “Citizen of
the Year” to promote community
involvement and sponsoring such
activities as “Meet Your Candi-
date” night and a Halloween
“spook house.”
The Jaycees also sponsored a
“Community Picnic” last year
and assisted in the annual Christ-
mas parade and Easter egg hunt.
During their 6-year history, the
Allen chapter has won numerous
awards for community service.
Currently, the chapter rates first
in Texas in its population cate-
gory.
President of the local chapter is
Keiffer Harwell, a former state
vice president. The chapter is
made up of Allen area men
between the ages of 18 and 36 and
meets the second and fourth
Thursdays at the Municipal
building.
Mike Garvin (727-4598) is
currently heading a membership
drive for the chapter.
