LADIES AUXILIARY OF ALLEN FIRE DEPT.:
I lost eight pounds but
abandoned my diet because of the
harmful side effects.'After several
days of conscientious weight-
watching, my disposition became
so rotten that my kids locked
themselves in their rooms and the
cat ran away. At night, I had a
recurring dream about mountains
of mashed potatoes, rivers of
cream gravy and forests of bread
sticks. I began to enjoy the
stuffing mix commercials on tele-
vision more than “Charlie s An-
gels”. And when the postman
delivered my “Playboy”, I flipped
right past the foldout and drooled
over a beer ad for almost an hour.
The crowning blow was when I
blacked-out at the supermarket
and attacked the store manager.
Now that I’ve started eating like
a human being again, I’ve put
those eight pounds back on (and
three more, to boot). And I don’t
consider myself overweight any-
more. I look at it this way: I’m
money saving fixes began to pay
off. I have not had a bill over
$80.00 since October, 1977. An
additional $50.00 was spent in
October to complete phase I of my
attack. I have a list of 20 attack
plans that can all be implemented
for less than $400.00 and this is
money that you, the Electric
Company, TP&L, will not receive
in the following years. Even
though you may raise your rates
to try and offset this loss of
revenue, it will be to no avail. I
will not tolerate bills of $204.00,
$180.00, etc. ever again.

Of all the perils of middle age,
certainly one of the worst is the
inability to control your weight.
When you get in your mid-thir-
ties, you discover that your body
doesn’t burn up those ol’ calories
the way it used to. You find that
you’re not eating any more food
than you did in the past;, the
problem is that your body has
suddenly decided to store a por-
tion of it'around your mid-section.
I know; that’s exactly what’s
happening to me.
At first, I tried to accept this
weight problem as just another
inevitable indicator of the body’s
aging process. I had gotten used
to having the elastic in my
undershorts roll comfortably un-
der my belly every time I bent
over. I had mastered the fine art
of sucking in my stomach in the
presence of mixed company. I had
even gone so far as to donate all of
my Continental sport shirts
and tight-fitting tank tops to
Goodwill.
I was even able to discount such
comments as “Putting on a little
weight, aren’t you?” and “I see
you haven’t been missing meals
lately.” People that said such
things, I convinced myself, were
simply trying to compensate for
their own inadequacies.
Then, one day, something
happened that shocked me back
into reality. I Was sitting next to
the neighborhood swimmimg pool
taking in a little sun when a little
boy came up to me and asked to
borrow my inner-tube. I wasn’t
even wearing one!
With that, I headed home a
broken man and informed my wife
that it was time that I went on a
diet. “It won’t be easy,” she told
me, “But if you’re serious about
losing a few pounds, I’ll be glad to

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following
letter was written by Allenite
Daniel Blair to Texas Power &
Light Company. He requested
that it be published in the Dear
Editor column.]
Dear Sir:
We refuse to Allow our electricity
bills to sky-rocket past our initial
house investment. If a total house
can be built with all its many
different functions for less money
than to heat and cool it, some-
thing is rotten with the system.
I have enclosed a chart of my
electric bill in graphic form. As
you can see, in 1974 my average
bill was only $34.40 and with that
I feel you were making a fair
profit. In 1975, you doubled your
intake. My average bill for that
year was $63.31. In 1976, you
really took the cake, and doubled
your profits once again. My
average bill was $117.54.
This is when I made up my mind
that I was tired of making the
electricity company “RICH”.
Many of my bills during 1976
exceeded my house payments.
That is utterly ridiculous in its
concept. There is no way that the
electric company can justify sup-
plying a product to aid a house-
hold operation which cost more
than the housing facility itself.
During this ridiculous year, I
made several calls to the electric
company for assistance in this
dilemma and had representatives
of the electric company come on
several occasions to no avail. My
bills kept on the incline. The
electric company demonstrated to
me that they really were not
interested in lowering my bill, but
merely in justifying their out-
rageous bills with comments like,
“I pay electricity bills too”,
“Turn your heat down, this will
help.”, "Insulate your attic.”,
“Caulk all doors.” and etc. It was
obvious to me from these and
many other comments that some-
thing had to be done to insure my
