February is with Riuington Street by
Meredith Tax. This compelling book is
the story of Russian immigrants at the
turn of the century. They escape the
pogroms of Europe to confront the hopes
and tragedies of life in America. The
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory disaster is an
important focal point of the story.

Monday Readers will meet next on
December 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the library
to discuss The Yellow Wind.
The Yellow Wind, by the leading
Israeli author David Grossman, is a
brilliant, al-beit controversial, first-hand
report of the Palestinian dilemma as
seen through the eyes of the author.
Grossman spent several months on the
left bank, living and observing the
Palestinians ... as one of them.
Anyone is welcome to join in the
discussion, but the group asks that
participants have read the book.
The first meeting of 1993 has been
set for January 11, when Bernard
Malamud’s classic novel, The Fixer, will
be the group’s topic. The Fixer is the
unforgetable story of an ordinary man in
Tsarist Russia who is accused of a crime
he did not commit. In the long suffering
that follows his refusal to confess, he
Tot Shabbat will continue on Decem-
ber 4. Services and songs begin at 6:00
p.m. with Rabbi Lyon and Diane Moreno
in the All Purpose Room of the Kaufman
Building. A story and a special Tot
Shabbat tradition makes the evening
perfect for the whole family.
Dinner is available for anyone wish-
ing to eat with us after services. Gener-
ous portions are served for $4.00 per
adult and $2.00 per child. It can’t be
beat! Whether you choose to stay with us
for dinner or not, please make plans to
join us for Tot Shabbat.
Call Miriam in Rabbi Lyon’s office,
771-6221, to make your dinner
reservations.
Now that we have finished our second
month of the school year, BIFTY’s
Executive Board is busy planning more
fun and exciting things to do. Already,
we have had some great programs.
During the last weekend in October, 12
BIFTYites went to TOFTY Fall Conclave
in Oklahoma City. On Saturday night,
November 7, BIFTY had Havdalah, ate
pizza, and went bowling.
If you are in grades 9-12, you can still
join BIFTY. We meet every Wednesday
night at 6:15 p.m. in the BIFTY Lounge
(it’s across from the Library). Food and
drinks are served. Immediately after the
meeting, there is Religious School.
If you are not part of BIFTY yet, you
are missing out. Call me at 437-1119
for more information, or if you have
any questions.

The Irvin M. Shlenker School will
hold its annual Grandparents Day on
Wednesday, November 25. All students
have invited their grandparents and spe-
cial friends to join them at school that
morning. The morning will begin at 10:00
a.m. with a reception for the guests in
Levy Hall. At 10:30 a.m., students in pre-
kindergarten through fifth grade will
present a program in the Sanctuary. Fol-
lowing the program, grandparents and
friends will be invited to visit students’
classrooms. This event has become a very
special day for the Shlenker family and we
hope that all Shlenker grandparents and
special friends will join us!
Interfaith Couples Meeting
The Interfaith Couples Group is ready
to begin a new year at a new time. The
first meeting will be held on Sunday,
December 6 from 10:00-11:30 a.m.
in the Hurwitz Building. The theme
for this meeting will focus on the
Jewish/Christian holiday season. Rabbi
Karff will lead the discussion.
The Interfaith Couples Group
welcomes new participants at any time
and looks forward to renewing touch
with those who have taken part in the
group’s meetings at other times. Those
who participate in the discussions fostered
by the Interfaith Couples Group find it
open, friendly and sensitive to the
situations often encountered by those
involved in an interfaith relationship.
For more information or to arrange
babysitting during the meeting, please
call Catherine Beer at the Temple office,
771-6221.
