Please join our Leisure Club (ages 60 & over) for a wonderful musical
program presented by Mr. Malcolm Rector. Mr. Rector has entertained
us before and was such a hit, we decided to bring him back. He is a very
accomplished pianist and composer and will be accompanied by
another musician on the string bass. Together they will perform a
variety of old favorites, jazz and easy listening music and some
Chanukah tunes. After the program, we will enjoy a delicious Chanukah
luncheon with lots of latkes.
Beth Israel Readers will meet on
Wednesday evening, December 9th
in the library to discuss Victor
Frankl’s classic book Man’s Search
for Meaning. Leading the discus-
sion is Hannah Schlamowitz. Cop-
ies of the book are available in the
Beth Israel Library and the Houston
Public Library. It is readily available
in paperback and would be an excel-
lent addition to one’s own book-
shelf. For more information about
the Beth Israel Readers, contact Bev
Curelop, the Reader Leader, at (281)
496-1974.
When first published in 1959,
Man’s Search for Meaning was
hailed as “one of the most out-
standing contributions to psycho-
logical thought.” While it is that, it
is much, much more. First, it is
easily readable and understandable.
Its message resonates on many lev-
els - but it speaks to the very heart
and soul of each individual, delving
into the innermost core and find-
ing the mettle that makes man an
indestructible being in the face of
any adversity.
In this slim volume, eminent psy-
chiatrist Victor Frankl tells a chill-
ing and inspirational story of sur-
vival in the horror of the Holocaust
and his personal imprisonment at
Auschwitz, Dachau and other
camps. Immersed in the miasma of
suffering that is the warp and woof
of the times, Frankl examines his
fellow man and wonders why man
was able not merely to survive but
to grow in the process. What was it
about man in this element that pro-
duced growth, sustained survival
and nurtured hope?
His conclusion that the most ba-
sic human motivation was the will to
meaning became the foundation the-
sis of his groundbreaking psycho-
logical theory - logotherapy. More
importantly, the expression of his
questioning, discovery and resolu-
tion provide us with true individual
insight into what defines the pur-
pose in each of our lives.
Though published almost 40 years
ago, Man’s Search for Meaning
speaks timeless truths. Join with the
Beth Israel Readers as they explore
this superb work of literature and life.
