THE FIRST GIRDER OF a 15-ton bridge crane is shown
being raised into place in the Central Shop Building. This
action look place last Monday when a mobile crane was called
into the Central Shop to lift the 13,000-pound unit 30 feet
above the floor to the crane end trucks which run along tracks.
A second girder was later raised to complete the unit which
weighs 50,000 pounds.
This crane, along with a second one to be installed soon, will
afford coverage for the Sheet Metal, Pipe, Welding, Boiler-
maker, Machinist, Electric, and Instrument departments. Two
similar bridge cranes, already in service, provide coverage for
other parts of the Shop. Several dozen smaller cranes, stra-
tegically located throughout the building, swing out from wall
locations for use in lifting lighter loads.
