of officers.
THE association holds at least
five concerts a year featuring top
artists in the classical music field.
“Such artists as Earl Wild, con-
cert pianist, and Jerome Hines,
bass baritone from the Metropoli-
tan Opera, have appeared before
the group in the past,” says R. C.
Haller, Research & Development,
president of the association.
Anyone desiring to become a
member may contact Haller; A. F.
Drouilhet, vice president in charge

urer; or Dr. J. T. Horeczy, secre-

Take one amateur astrono-
mer, add one amateur photog-
rapher, toss in a homemade
telescope, a miniature camera
and a lot of know-how and you
have a combination that’s bound
to turn up something unusual.
WHEN Wallace Tale and Dan
Casselman, both in the Engineer-
ing department, got together the
night of February 10, they really
came up with some unusual pic-
tures. Tate is the amateur astrono-
mer and Casselman, the photog-
rapher.
The results of their work are
shown in the pictures, below. One
photo shows the moon at first
quarter phase. The inset picture is
of the planet Jupiter enlarged by
Casselman to 39 limes the size of
the spot on the negative (flattening
caused by centrifugal force as the
planet rotates). In the first photo,
Tate and Casselman are shown ex-
amining their camera-tel escope
combination. They attached a
threaded adapter onto the tele-
scope, focused through a special
ground glass, then attached the
camera and snapped the pictures.
IT’S THE first lime either man
has successfully photographed a
celestial or “heavenly” body
through a telescope although they
both had attempted it before indi-
vidually. Casselman tried to pho-
tograph an eclipse of the sun while
he was in the Army Air Corps
during World War II. Tate was
unsuccessful in earlier attempts to
get pictures through his scope.
Tale, who first became in-
terested in astronomy at 13 as a
Boy Scout, made the telescope in
the summer of 1952, grinding and
polishing the six-inch magnifying
mirror by hand in the Humble
Club’s handicraft shop. It cost
him about $4.2 to build the entire
