Tennis team set to kick
off junior season
Michael Marbach
Sport Editor
The Texan tennis teams
will be hitting the courts in less
than three weeks and third year
coach Craig Clifford is
enthusiastic about his team, "I
, think we should do well this
spring. We have added a little
depth to both of our men's and
women's teams and we should be
strong,"
Tarleton's tennis teams
are in their junior season of
eompetiton. The past two seasons
ended up to undefeated Conference
Championships. The men also
came away with a District title
last season and went on to place
26th in the National tournament.
This was remarkable for the non-
scholarship team (Nationals is
dominated by scholarship
Universities).
The women placed second
in District VIII last season. This
year's TexAnns will even be
stronger with a few returners and
some good newcomers. Carolyn
Cashon, Ann Sewell, Kerry
Chism, Teri Hoerster, Tammy
Murray, Teresa Burkhalter,
Cassandra Tucker, Kathy Kennedy,
Carol Anne Carlisle and Suzanne
Farmer will make up the women's
team.
The men's team will
miss Steven McKrane, last year's
big gun, yet this year's team may
be stronger down the line. "We
lost a big gun in McKrane" said
Clifford, "but we may be a little
stronger and show a little more
depth."
The men's team will
consist of Wes Madis, Jeff
Matlock, Steve Maupin, Dennis
Schreffler, Andre Thomas and
Marcus Kerr. .
This past fall, the two
teams played a lot of big Junior
College's. "We didn't win a lot of
matches, but we got in some good
work," said Clifford. That much
heeded work may help the Texans
down the road as Howard Payne
and the University of Dallas will
be tougher this season.
The season starts up
February 12 on the road against
Weatherford. The first home
match win be March 7 starting at
noon. Come out and catch the
action.
Texans
"That's the best percentage we've
givin up in some time" said Reis-
man.
However, the final score told
the real stoiy as three Texans ended
up in double figures. Steve Sassman
rolled up 13 points and was three of
six from three point range. Mark
Smith added 12 points and 10 re-
bounds. Edward Milton tallied up
six assist and had two steals.
"The kids are playing hard right
now. They are an their stretch run
right now said Reisman ."making
the stretch run for Kansas(the sight
of the National Championship final
20) is going to be tough. We need the
support of the students. They will be
a big part in February,"
The Texans are currently 15-4
on the season and 6-0 in conference
play. It's a tough road ahead, but this
year's Texan team may just have
what it takes.
TexAnns
Tarleton record. "She's a great
point guard, she sees the court
well and is able to get the ball
where it needs to be."
The TexAnns outscored
the Cowgirls 31-13 in the second
half, just as they did last Saturday
in Alpine when they had a 50-20
second half rally. This win gives
the women a seven game winning
streak going into Monday nights
game with Texas Wesylan.
Kristen Curtis had 13
points for the game and was a
perfect 3-3 from the three point
line. Karla Dick put in 15 points
and Helena Smith put in eight.
Last Saturday the
TexAnns upped their conference
mark to 5-0 when they shot down
the Lobos in Alpine 82-51. These
last two big wins will definatley
help the confidence of the TexAnn
team heading into the last half of
the conference go around.

Pleasant, enthusiastic,
about his track- team
six top seniors returning. Three
time outdoor All-Americans Tom
Green, Jeff Smith and Pat Jones are
returning for their senior seasons.
Mike Pinkerton, Danny Wood and
Rodney Cumrnings are aslo back
for their senior seasons making up
an expierenced senior group.
Pleasant feels that the men will be
extremely strong in indoor as well
as outdoor meets. Green, Smith,
Jones and Pinkerton, along with
Spivey Thomas have all been
indoor Ail-Americans. As if this
team wasn't already strong, there are
many top newcomers, including

Tarleton's 91 track team is
looking very good in the eyes of
Coach Carl Pleasant. Coach
Pleasant is very fired up over his,
largest and strongest team ever.
Pleasant is looking forward to the
upcoming indoor and outdoor
meets. He feels both the men and
women have excellent chances of
placing many runners in the
national meets.
The women have a young
team with Lynne Marek, Michelle
Davis, Tami Martinka and Angie
Smith being the only upperclass
women returning. Though there are
few returners this '91 women's team
is the largest in Tarleton history.
There are many freshman
newcomers, including Linda Garcia
who competed in the national cross-
country meet last fall. This
women's team which has Coach
Pleasant very excited also includes
Tasi Knox, Jenny Newton, Kala
Duke, Domitras Watts, Delana
Swearengin, Charmease Gwenn,
Holly Ethridge, Carmen Colon,
Belinda Hardee, Rachel Garcia and
Kim Lipok.
According to Coach
Pleasant, one word describes his
mens team: "Exciting." There are

Sports Information
Tarleton State University
will enter its "senior" year of
baseball when the season starts in
February. The baseball program at
Tarleton was restarted in 1988 after
a 19-year absence. This season will
mark the fourth season of play.
Only four players remain
from that first season: pitchers
Keith Westberry and Bobby
Blackwell, first baseman Mike
Cantu and outfielder Billy Johnson.
Cantu and Johnson were both All-
District selections last year.
The 1991 schedule will be
the toughest on record in the short
history of the program,. The 62-
game schedule features ten games
with NCAA Division I opponents
and nine games with three of the
top five teams in the NAIA.
"I think the challenge of
the schedule will make us a better
team," says second-year head coach
Jack Allen, "The teams in this
conference (Austin Colllege,
Howard Payne and Sul Rqss State)
will also be better, so we'll have
our work cut out for us."
Allen does have several
significant advantages over last year
when the Texans finished 29-20-1,
placing second in the Texas
Intercollegiate Athletic Association
and fourth in the NAIA District
VIII Tournament.
First, the team is loaded
with more power hitters and more
left-handed batters. Second, the
team should be better defensively,
particularly at catcher and third
base. Third, this year's team appears
to have a pitching staff, something
that was desperately missing in
1990. Lastly, there is more team
speed and better bat control,
allowing the Texans to do a lot
more offensively.
"We should be improved
in just about every area of the
game," Allen says. "With our
schedules, we're going to need to be.
We'll be competitive and I can
promise you we won't be boring."
Allen breaks down the
Texans by position.
Catchers: "Our tandem of
Nick Alvarado and Brian Betancourt
will be as good as any in the
NAIA. Both are excellent receivers
who can work a good game."
Alvarado batted .387 last
year while making All-Conference
at Laredo Junior College.
Betancourt, from Brooklyn, New
York, was All-Regional at
Queensborough Community
College where he batted an amazing
.650 and had 14 home runs.
First Base: "Cantu has a
lock on the position, just as he has
the last three years. Terry Britton
and Greg Hillman will sub for him
there."
Cantu carries two-time
All-District honors, a career ,404
batting average and an impressive
39 home runs into his senior
season. He's also a fine defensive
player. Britton, a former Oklahoma
All-Stater, is a transfer from El
Reno Junior College. Hillman,
one of last year's top pitchers , will
give the Texans another left-handed
bat when he subs for Cantu.
Second Base: "This
position is a reial toss-up between
Richard Baker, Steve Salsman and
Toby McDonald. The one who
plays will probably depend on who
is hot. Baker is the best defensive
player, Salsman the better batter
and McDonald is also an offensive
plus."
Baker is a transfer from
Howard Junior College. Salsman,
a red-shirt last year, aid McDonald
both come from Hill Junior
College. McDonald, a gap-hitter,
had 22 doubles at Hill last year.
, Third Base: "Tony Matta
is a gem and better than anything
we've had there. He's got good
range, a strong arm and a solid bat.
Kim Zeigler will back him up and
he is also a fine defensive player."
Matta, a Ranger Junior
College transfer, is from Rio
Grande, Puerto Rico, and carries a
.389 batting average. Ziegler, a
lefty hitter, is a transfer from
Vernon Regional Junior College.
