Baseball
Shortstop: "Two of our
returning players, Brendon Legendre
and Chris Polvado, will work the
position. Again, the starter will be
whichever one is hot. Brendon
improved dramatically both
defensively and offensively in the
fall. Chris has tons of ability, can
hit to all parts of the park, has a
great arm and good speed. He just
needs to put it all together."
Legendre batted .229 and
Polvado hit .259 last spring. Both
will be looking to bring those
numbers up significantly.
Left Field: "Clegg Smith
earned the position in the fall. He's
a great defensive outfielder and lias a
good arm. Marcus Moreno looks
to back him up."
Smith, who played mostly
in right field last year, batted .237
and missed most of the season with
a shoulder injury. Moreno is a
transfer from Laredo Junior College
and another lefty hitter.
Center Field: "I'm
expecting Johnson to have another
great year. Greg Yeamans, who's
being converted from third base,
should see backup duty."
Johnson, an All-District
choice, led the team with a .435
batting average and hit six triples
last year. Yeamans is an All-State
freshman from Bay City.
Right Field: "Greg
Vanover, a freshman walk-on, has
been a pleasant surprise. He's got a
strong arm and good speed. Roy
Franklin, another freshman, will
probably split time there. Franklin
is probably the quickest player on
the team."
Vanover was an All-
District player at Converse Jusdson
while Franklin was an Ail-District
player out of Heame.
Right-handed Pitchers:
"We've got Blackwell and
Westberry returning for their senior
years. I'll be looking at both of
them as spot starters and long
relievers . On the transfer side we
h^ve Julio Jimenez who will be a
long and short reliever as well as a
spot starter and J. Todd Taylor who
will be our top relief pitcher. Then
we have better than average arms in
freshman Jason Neiderer, Shawn
Webb and Chad Fox. All three
could be among the top pitchers.
Webb and Fox will be among the
top four on the staff." Jason
Blevins is also a tough right-,
handed pitcher. }
Blackwell posted a 4-2
(from page 4)
record last year but a high 7.47
earned run average. Westberry had a
team leading 4.01 ERA, a 4-2
record and all five of the team's
saves.
Jimenez, a transfer from
Howard Junior College out of New
York, had a 3.29 ERA last year.
Taylor pitched for Ranger Junior
College. Neiderer is from Killeen
Ellison High, Webb is from
Bridgeport where he posted a 15-5
two-year record and Fox is from
Spring Houston Westfield High.
Blevins was 11-3 at Vernon
Regional Junior College.
Left-handed Pitchers:
"Hillman and Larry Brister return
from last year. Hillman gets better
all the time and has gained self-
confidence. He'll also play some
first base and be one of our lefty
designated hitters. Brister will be a
long reliever. We have three
transfers who will see a lot of
innings in Greg Davis, David
Alson and Brit Wiegand. Davis
will be among our top four
pitchers. Alson will be our stopper
from the left side. Wiegand will be
a spot starter and long reliever."
Hillman posted a 2-2
record last year and a 5.59 ERA .
Brister had a 2-3 record and a 7.23
ERA.
Davis won four games and
had a 4.01 ERA at Ranger Junior
College. Alson , a senior, attended
UT- Arligton. He posted a 6-1
mark last year at Paris Junior
College.
Pitching Staff Overall:
"We have an exceptional group of
freshmen in Fox, Webb, Neiderer,
Richard High and Joe Williamson
(both out of Eastland). I've got a
staff that has good starters, long and
short relievers and stoppers. I
won't have to leave a pitcher out
there when he gets in trouble
because we'll have lots of people
who can throw."
