| "BIG BERTHA” is what electricians call this giant motor
from an air compressor at the Lube Agitators. In the photo
above, the motor dwarfs V. E. Waddell, electrician who is
working on it. The motor was returned from a shop in Houston
just last week after its coils were completely rewound. "Big
Bertha,” is one of the largest electric motors in the Refinery,
surpassed in size by only one other air compressor, a 600
horsepower motor at No. 2 Air Station near No. 6 Boilerhouse.
| “Bertha” develops 400 horsepower and turns at 200 rpm. It
was installed in April of 1927 to provide low pressure, high
volume air compression used to blow out bleacher tanks and
kettles.
