grid field teams ate gearing up for the
biggest meet so far in this outdoor
season when they host die Tarleton
College Relays this coming Thurs-
day.
Twelve college teams are ex-
pected to participate in the meet and
give Tarleton a chance to show-off
the type of talent expected to, make
an impressive showing in the track
and field national meet the Tarleton
will again host on May 23-25.
On the women's side, Belinda
Hardee has already set a school rec-
ord and qualified for the national
meet with a shot put throw of 44'1".
Tessie Knox is close to qualifying as
are the relay teams. "We just need a
little more work and we can get
there," Coach Carl Pleasant said.
On the men's side, Mike Pinker-
ton is close to qualifying in both the-
110 high hurdles and long jump.
Chris Johnson and Pat Jones are close
to qualifying marks in the 400 meter
hurdles and Spivey Thomas is close
to the needed time in the open quar-
ter, Both of Tarleton's men's relay
teams are close to the standards as
well. The 4 x 400 relay team, which
finished third in the outdoor nation-
als last year and third in the indoor
national this year, is made up to of
the same four team members in
Spivey Thomas, Jeff Smith, Pat Jones
and Tom Green.
"We usually have a pretty good
little college meet here in the Tarel-

kids really enjoy running in front of
the home crowd."

Coach Craig Clifford is predict-
ing an undefeated T1AA season lor
the women's tennis team, which
stands 7-0 on the year after Tues-
day's win at McMurray University.
Ann Sewell and Carolyn Cashon arc
both 6-1 in singles play and are
undefeated 7-0 in doubles play.
For die men's team, the chances
. tieing for the TIAA title appear
hinged on an April 16 date at How-
ard Payne. The Texans are 6-1 on the
year with the only loss coming to
Howard Payne. Steve Mauoin is 7-
0 in singles play and Dennis Schrcf-
ilcr is 6-1. TTie two are 7-0 in double
competition.
"Winning the conference is not
a big deal," Clifford said, "although
we'd like to go out as champions.
We're more concerned about Dis *
trict play." The Tarleton men's team
won the district last year and quali-
fied for the national tournament.

Coach Jack Allen sat
behind his baseball-statistics
covered desk, looking pleasant and
content. And why not? The skipper
of Tarleton State University's
baseball team has posted eight
Victories in the last 11 games, is
undefeated in the conference, and
owns the TIAA's player and pitcher
of the week.
"I feel, we've played very,
very well," Allen said, "We've been
hitting the ball good, and the
pitching for the most part has been
excellent."
B ut the lines of experience
on his face seem to forshadow the
obstacles that loom ahead, for this
season is far from over.
"We need to work on
making the routine play," Allen
said, "You can't give a good ball
club four or five outs an inning."
The Texans have a 6-0
conference record and are tied for
first place with Howard Payne
University. The two heavyweights
will face -off this weekend in
Brownwood with one game on
Friday beginning at 2 p.m. and two
games on Saturday beginning at
noon.
Tarleton has several
standouts on this year's squad. Julio
Jimenez is 4-0 with one save and
has a team-best 2.67 earned run
average. Greg Hillman has earned a
4-1 record and leads the staff in
strikeouts with 36. J. Todd Taylor
also has a 4-1 record, and Jason
Blevins is 5-3. Texan pitchers have
amassed 211 strikeouts. \-/
"Reliever^Kisith Westberry
is the TIAA's Pitcher of the Week.
Kicth set a school record with seven
saves, and had back-to-back saves in
6-4 and 7-4 wins over Sul Ross on
Saturday.
Centerfielder Billy
Johnson was named TIAA's player
of the week. Billy went 11 for 21 at
the plate inb seven games last
week, scored nine times and had 13
RBI's. Johnson has seven home
runs, and set a school record with a
mind-boggling four grand slams.
Additionally, Michael
Cantu played his 200th career game
in a Texan uniform Tuesday night.
He is batting .418 and has
unleashed 12 home runs, Tarleton
batters have knocked in 239 runs,
and have posted a .325 batting
average.-
"We really encourage the
student body to attend our games,"
Allen said, "Someday you'll be able
to say 'I saw him before he was in
the majors."'

TARLETON TAKES ON CO-LEADER IN H.P.U.
The Texans will put their unblemished record in Texas Intercolle-
giate Athletic Assocaition play up against the other undefeated T.I.A.A.
team when they travel to Brownwood to play Howard Payne University. The
two teams will square off in a nine-inning game at 2 p;\}y on Friday and play
a double-header, on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Tarle^n has never lost to
Howard Payne, holding an 18^ series edge.
BATTING AVERAGE RISES BUT SO DOES ERA
With nearly two-thirds of the season over, Tarleton's batting
average is a very respectable.328, not far off from the school record of .340.
Tarleton's free-swinging batters also carry a hefty .528 slugging percentage,
as well as a high 199 strikeouts on the year. Catcher Marino Beato leads the
team in batting average through 40 games with a .419 average, followed by
four-year starterMike Cantu with a .418 average. Tarleton's other regular,
Brian Betancourt, sports a .383 average.
Tarleton pitchers have combined for a 5.31 earned run average;
much better than last month due to five double figure scoring games by the
opponents. The good news is that four of Tarleton's pitchers ;liave recorded
four or more victories this year while reliever Keith Westberry lias set a
school record with seven saves.
R-B.I- LEADERS AND LONG BALL HITTERS
Coach Jack Allen is quite happy with the more balanced runs batted
in production this year. Four players have over 30 R.B.I.'s led by Billy
Johnson with 40. Mike Cantu follows with 38, Greg Vanover with 32 and
Biran Betancourt with 31.
Part of the reason Johnson leads in R.B.I,'s stems fiorn the fact that
he has hit a school record four grand slams this year. Tliat's 16 funs batted
in on four swings of the bat! Cantu led the team in home runs with 12 and has
hit 51 in his career at Tarleton. Betancourt and Tony Matta have five home
runs apiece, followed by Greg Vanover and Clegg Smith, with four apiece.
Betancourt leads in doubles with nine and Johnson and Matta have four
triples apiece.
CANTU Hrrs 200 GAME MARK
First Baseman Mike Cantu played in his 200th career game when
the Texans played Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday night (3/26). He has missed
just three games in four years.
Three other Tarleton golfers are
among the ten lowest shooters in
Jason Hill (157), Kyle Burns(160)
and Thomas Tennison(167).
The second round of the TIAA
golf tournament is April 8-9 at Wic-
hita Falls.
