Tarleton rodeo dominates Hill College
By Julie Grider
Editor to Chief
The Tarleton Stale Rodeo Asso-
ciation dominated all but one event
in a landslide victory over Hill Col-
lege Sept 13 and 14 during the an-
nual Intramural rodeo held at the
Erath Co. Arena in Stephen ville.
Tram roping was the only event
the Hill cowboys and cowgirls
managed to capture by winning the
top two places, Tarleton swept the
top three notches in bareback riding,
calf roping, break away roping, bar-
rel racing and bull riding. In steer
wrestling, saddle bronc and goat
tying, Tarleton won the events with
Hill placing in the later spots.
Overall there were 194 compe-
tetors in the rodeo with 110 being
from TSU and 84 from Hill.
TSU rodeo coach Randy Ma-
jors was proud of his team and
pleased with the way the rodeo turned
out.
"I was impressed with the' team
effort from everybody. I can tell it
created comradery," Majors said.
Charles Soileau, the saddle
,bronc event winner, thought the Intra-
mural rodeo was a good warm up fa-
regional competition which will
begin next weekend.
"We really have a lot of talent
and if everybody has good luck we
will win the nation," Soileau said.
"This is my last year to rodeo for
Tarleton and I'd sure like to go out as
national champions,"
Majors is also very optomistie
about the upcoming season.
"I dqri't think there is any school
in the United States that can beat us
school for school," Majors said.
Tarleton will compete in their
first NIRA regional competition Sept.
19-22 at Eastern New Mexico Uni-
versity in Portales, New Mexico.
Rodeo team members, those
whose points count for the team
standings, for the first rodeo are
Schelli Walls, J J, Hampton, Jackie
Parker, Dax Lackey, Randall
Thornton, Jeff King, Charles Soil-
eau, Carter Edmonson and Beau
Mayo.
The TSU Rodeo Association is
also having another successful year
still boasting the largest member-
ship organization on campus. The
1991-1992 officers are Londa Med-
lin, president; Keith Tucker, vice
president; Leigh Ann Winters, sec-
retary; Karla Friesenhahn, treasurer,
and Julie Grider, reporter.
