Texans drop number two at home
By Marc Parks .
J-TAC Sports Writer
For the second week
in a row the Tarleton State
University Texans came up on the
short end of the stick as the
Cameron University Aggies
outlasted the Texans 24-7 at
Memorial Stadium,
The Texans came out of
the blocks quickly with
determination and fire in their
eyes.
Once again the Texan
defense sparked the team by
forcing a turnover after an
impressive Aggie drive to the
TSU 20. The Aggies were
stopped by a hit from defensive
end Eddie Washington causing a
fumble. Rich Barkley recovered
and the offense took over.
With this little spark the
Texans came up with their first
score of season. Quarterback
Jimmy Hering dominated the drive
by first taking a beautifully
designed quarterback draw sending
him 37 yards down to the Aggie
10. From there, Hering hit Kevin
Benjamin in the endzone as
Tarleton took the early 7-0 lead.
On the drive, Hering
totaled 74 yards passing and
rushing. This really brought the
fans to life and revived the
football spirit of old.
The second quarter was a
different story though, as the
Cameron Aggies started to pull
ahead with a Field goal and two
touchdowns.
The effects of playing a
scholarship team for the second
straight week started to show as
the Texan defense seemed winded
by the end of the half. This was
evident, as the Texans missed four
tackles on the last play of the
half.
A 55 yard pass and run
ended the half with a Cameron
advantage of 17-7.
The second half was a lot
of the same, due to numerous
penalties and dropped key passes.
"We had a chance to win
but a dropped pass in the endzone
and a missed field goal really hurt,"
said Texan Coach Hal McAfee.
Tarleton ended the game
with 118 yard in penalties, many of
which either killed Texan drives or
assisted Cameron drives.
"We improved over last
week's performance but we still
lack consistancy. We had an
opportunity to win, but a mental
lapse and penalties really hurt us,"
McAfee added.
Total offense improved
over last week to 220 yards while
the defense allowed 365 total yards.

defense include Roy Graham with

Tough road ahead in
Sports Information
This Saturday the Tarleton State
University Texans will be hittting
the road in their first of six long hauls
. this season. Ihis first stop will be a
challenge as the Texans try to topple
N.A.I.A. Division I Nationally
ranked1 Northwestern State Univer-
sity. The Rangers, ranked tenth,
come into the game witha 1-0 season
record.
The Texans willl once more have
their hands full with their third schol-
arship opponent in three weeks*.
However, they are showing signs of
promise with an offense that is aging
quickly and a defense that is playing
with a tremendous amount of emo-
tion.
Even with this, the task at hand
will by no means be an easy effort.
The Ranger defense racked up some
great numbers last week in their 23-
6 win over Langston University.
They held Langston to just three
yards rushing on 37 attempts. Of-
fensively the Rangers were a bit
sluggish in their opener only rushing
for 87 yards and passing for 153. Yet
they were able to light up the score
board with 23 points .
Northwestern rnnningback Roy
PlaU will be the man to watch as he
rushed for 75 yards and one touch-
down in his 22 carries last week.
Piatt rushed for six hundred yards
last year. Quarterback Jimmy Brown
completed six of 11 passes for 110
yards and a touchdown and Brad
Vincent the Rangers linebacker was
credited with 11 tackles. In the sec-
ondary Fred Slaughter had an inter-
ception and three tackless,
TSU showed some signs of
promise last week, nearly tripling
their offensive production from the
First week. Still, the Texans are
managing less than 60 yards on the
ground and no runningback has a
longer run than nine yards. Tarle-

ton's passing attack has been victim-
ized by 12 drops in the first two
weeks, including one touchdown and
three first downs.
Tarleton's defense has been
strong in spots but has fallen victim
to let downs in the fourth quarter.
The defense is giving up 333 yards a
game and have seen 100-yard rush-
ing performances in the fust two
games. Still, the defense las forced
five fumbles, two interceptions and
six sacks.
"First of all we need to get sane
respect bade," said Texan Coach Hal
McAfee. "We have to learn from
each situation, and keep the faith in
what we're doing. If we do this we
will have a chance to win."
This Ranger team will probably
, be the toughest team they have faced
thus far. But stranger tilings have
happened, and a possible upset in This past week the Texans were drilled with penalties in their 24-7 loss to Cameron State
Oklahoma could definately be a University. This week the Texans hit the road for Oklahoma to do battle with tenth ranked
strange blessing. Northwestern State. This game could be the toughest thus far for the Texans.

basketball fund at Tarleton Stole Uni-
versity, will be held September 28.
The TexAnn Tour features dis-
tances of 60, 30, 15, nine and four,

are more competitive races.
All the rides begin at 9 am. and
leave from the west side of Wisdom
Gymnasium.
Prices for the TexAnn Tour are
$15 before September 15 and $18
after September 15. Families of four
or more riders are $12 each and the

"Our whole concept since we
started the TexAnn Tour is for the
riders to have fun and also enjoy a
challenging course," tour director Jan
Lowrey says.
"We added the shorter routes so
more people could enjoy the day and
have some fun with it"
