Texans come up short in 27-21 loss
By Marc Parks
J-TAC Sports Writer
The Tarleton Texans at
this point in the season njay be
0-3, but like a good whiskey
< they're getting better with age.
In last week's 27-21
heartbreaker to -Northwestern
Oklahoma the Texans really
started coming into their own as
a last minute drive, that could
have won the game, ended in a
game of inches.
"Our chemistry is really
coming together," Coach Hal
McAfee said. "We're not far
from being real good, but a few
secondary mistakes really hurt
us."
The first quarter started
poorly for the Texans as
Northwestern scored three times
to take a 17-0 lead. Each score
was a direct result of great field
position.
Jimmy Hering, after
being hit from behind, fumbled
on his own 23 yard line for the
first break of the game. With
9:17 left in the first quarter, the
Texam defense faced its first test
deep in their own territory.
They were able to rise
to the challenge as they held
Northwestern to a field goal after
being first and goal from the
two. Eddie Washington headed
the defensive surge by dropping a
Northwestern running back for a
one yard loss to start the series.
From there, a 30 mile
per hour wind played havic with
two Kyle Allred punts that
averaged-only 20 yards. Great
field position and TSU secondary
lapses resulted in two quick
scoring passes of 32 and 48
yards. Northwestern led 17-0 at
the end of the first quarter.
Tarleton answered
quickly in the second with a 54
yard touchdown drive that ended
with a great catch by Brendon
Johnson. The 25-yarder from
Herring shifted the momentum to
the TSU sideline.
Coach Hal McAfee
reached into his bag of tricks early
on the next TSU posession and
came out smelling like a rose.
On a halfback option Brian Bailey
passed to Walter Favors for the
second Texan touchdown pulling
them to within three. The first
half ended at 17-14.
Tarleton started the sec-
ond half with the pigskin and
promptly turned the ball over on
an interception. Herring's second
interception of the night resulted
in Northwestem's third touchdown
and a ten point margin.
Northwestem's scoring
didn't stop there. Once again
Allred faced a tough wind and only
managed a 29-yard punt.
Starting at the 50,
Northwestern found moving the
ball some what difficult as the
TSU defense faced a crucial series.
The wind helped Northwestern
some what as Brent Ketchum
extended the lead to 13 with a 47
yard field goal.
The quarterback draw
worked well for Herring again in
the next TSU scoring drive. The
42 yard scamper set up a one yard
run by Albert Martinez to bring
the Texans within six,
Michael Dube came up
with a key interception when
things were looking bleak for the
Texans, After he returned the ball
15 yards, the Tarleton offense
took over on their own 30,
A great catch by Ryan
Bailey moved the Texans into
Northwestern territory. After a
quarterback sack on Herring TSU
faced a fourth and three from the
41. Robert Simpson carried the
b. '.1 up the middle for two plus
yards. A poor spot left Tarleton
just inches shy of a first and the
