Fox selected for 1992
U.S. Olympic tryouts
By Michael Marbach
J-TAC Sports Editor
It wasn't luck that
brought Chad Fox the opportunity
to try out for the Olympic
Baseball team it was his rocket
arm.
In only his second year
of college, Fox has been asked to
try out for the 1992 Olympic
team and it comes with good
reason.
The young sophomore
talent has a lightning fast 95 mile
per hour fastball. With that kind
of velocity it should not of taken
long for the scouts of the
Olympics to decide on him.
Fox played for the
Texans last season with a season
mark of 3-1, however control has
been his problem. His high
school coaches kept him at third
base rather than take a chance on
his inaccuracy, but with a little
experience on the mound and the
help of TSU Coach Jack Allen he
has developed a good bit of his
needed control.
"I've come a long way.
My control's getting better. I've
still got a lot of work, but once
this semester's over I hope I'll be
there." Fox said.
The Texan pitcher is one
of five Texas baseball players to
be asked to try out for the
Olympic team, and what a great
honor it is.
Last season Fox was
wanted by the Atlanta Braves, but
he waived his chances to better his
control. This meant one more
season with the Texans. He didn't
know his choice would bring him
an Olympic try out, but none the
less he has gotten the call.
With a little bit of luck
and that rocket arm maybe Chad
Fox will be wearing the red white
and blue for the United States in
'92.

Poor conditions
play havic in East-
ern New Mexico
By Julie Grider
Editor in Chief
Tarleton newcomers Jeff King
and Jeremy Janous took what little
glory there was for TSU at the sea-
son-opening NIRA rodeo at Eastern
New Mexico University in Portales,
New Mexico.
King, a transfer student from
Vernon Regional Junior College,
won the average in bareback riding
with a score of 72 in the short go.
King, who went into the finals in
seventh place after a score of 65 in
the long go, says he just got. lucky.
"I had a good horse but there
were a lot of guys who had better
ones. I just had to ride my horse that
much better...I got lucky and every-
thing worked," King said.
Janous, a freshman from Kileen,
enjoyed his college rodeo debute in
the 40 degree rain and mud a bit
more than the others - he split first in
the long go of bull riding with a 76.
Although he bucked off in the short
go, he still split fourth in the average,
because only three cowboys rode the
full eight seconds.
King was the only Tarleton
competitor on the school's men's
team who earned points. Although
Janous placed, his points did not
count toward the team title race since
he was not one of six designated
members of Tarleton's team, which
is entered before each rodeo.
" We got our sorry rodeo out. of
the way and now we can look for
better days in the future," Tarleton
coach Randy Magers said.
Tarleton entered 67 competitors
in the first of 10 region rodeos and a
few of them placed in the average,
Kristy Schmidt finished third in goat
tying, Trent Walls finished third in
calf roping and Wade Rust finished
fourth in calf roping.
J.J. Hampton and La Dawn
Puckett of TSU split first in the long
go of breakaway roping. However,
Hampton broke the barrier in the
short go and Puckett received a no
time.
Charles Soileau was another
Tarleton competitor who qualified
for the finals but did not place in the
average. Soileau, a former College
Narional Finals competitor, Med to
have his spurs above the bronc's
shoulders the first jump out of the
chute and was disqualified.
Magers blamed the cold tem-
perature, heavy rain, and sloppy
arena for much of the teams prob-
lems.
"Conditions did not allow any
of the contestants to compete at the
best of their abilities," Magers said.
Odessa College won the overall
men's team trophy while Eastern New
Mexico won the women's division.
The next NIRA rodeo will be
October 3-6 at Sull Ross State Uni-
versity in Alpine, Tx.

INTRAMURALS
HOWDY STUDENTS!! !!! I am sure by now
every student has became aware of the Intramural
Department. If there are a few students that are not
familiar with the Intramural Department and its
location(GOD FORBID), here is some directions that one
might find helpful. The Intramural Department is located
directly across from the Tarleton Student- Center and
between the cafeteria and the administration building. The
Intramural Department features a hydra-fitness room,
basketball/volleyball court and information, oh all upcoming.
events.
The events that are presently underway are flag football
and womens volleyball. The upcoming events are
men/women tennis singles which will start September 26,
and men and co-ed volleyball which will both start on
October 1.
Whether you participate or just observe, intramural sports
are a lot of fun.
DON'T MISS OUT!!!
