He was begining to tremble and
turn ferret red "You think of that
noble creature as a pet, I think of her
as a non-human companion." For a
minute I thought he was referring to
my brother-in-law. "It's people like
you who kill baby bunnies just to test
eye makeup."

I decided he must have meant a dif-
ferent sort of testing. It seemed a
good time to leave. "I have to go and
ah...urh,„ah... take my dog to her
natural childbirth class or some-
thing." I started to walk off when he
grabbed me by my arm.
"Come on man, do the right
thing... let her go. Set ho- free so she
can enjoy the park as much as you
do."
I could see that he really and

lieved that Sammy had the same
rights that I did and would somehow
feel more fulfilled if I'd only slip her
choke chain off.
So I did. She whipped around
and bit Lothar on his buttocks and
then ran down the path to find some
trash to eat
"Have a nice day," I yelled back
at him as I ran after her.

exclamation points).
"Exactly!"
The date went very well. We
talked a great deal and had a very
good time. I probably would have
been more comfortable if people
didn't keep coming up to me and
asking me if Rufus (Bufort?) knew I
was there with Bienda. They always
had a sad look in their eyes when
they asked.
That night, after the game, we
sat in her car mid talked for a long
time. She talked to me about being a
senior and being afraid to go to col-
lege. I had thought she was perfect
and had no problems, but she was
real and that actually made her even
more beautiful to me.
I talked to her about being a
freshman and how scared I had been
about this date. I told her I felt
awkward, and she told me that I was
cute and before I graduated, I would
be a heart-breaker. I told her she
already was.
I kissed her that night That may
not seem like a big deal, but it was to
me. My heart was beating like crazy,
and my palms were all sweaty, but
she let me kiss her, and I was in
Heaven.
We were never a couple. Not
too much later, she got back together
with Rufus, or whatever his name
was. She graduated (I was there),
and moved away. We said we would
write, but eventually we fell out of
touch, and I haven't heard from her in
years.
She made me feel good about
myself and believe in myself. I like
to think that I helped her feel good
about herself, too.
Sometimes, people seem beyond
our reach, but if we go for it, we may
find that they are just waiting for
someone to offer a hand. People are
people, and none of us are that fa
apart.
