This week the
competition will by no means be
any easier as the 0-4 Texans take
on Sothwestern College. The
Moundbuilders may have their
strongest team ever with a 3-0
record and a number eight NAIA
Division II ranking.
*
They come into the game
with three major wins. The first
was a 35-0, mauling, then a 61-21
run away and 55-0 blow out.
There defense is ranked third in the
nation allowing 164 yards a game
(76 rushing and 88 yards passing).
Southwestern is fourth
nationally in offense, averaging
496 yards a game (284 yards
rushing and 212 yards passing).
They are also fourth in scoring
offense at 50.33 points a game.
Tarleton's defense is
allowing 300 yards and 19 points
per game and will be called on
once again to keep the Texans in
the game. They gave up just 10
points last week even though
Austin College had first and goal
four times. Southwestern is not a
one dimensional team. They can
run or pass with equal
effectiveness. Stopping them will
be difficult
The Texans must find
some way to move the ball to
keep Southwestern's offense off
the field. But Tarleton took a
giant step backwards in their
performance last week. Three
fumbles, an interception, six sacks
and a blocked punt. Tarleton is
^aimrtg'just 77 yaFds rushing arid
116 yards passing per game.
However, Robert Simpson ran
well last week. He had 81 yards
against the top-ranked defense in
NAIA division II.
Simpson became the
third leading rusher in Tarleton
history last week. He has 2,177
career yards and needs 178 yards to
take over second. Defensively,
free safety Michael Dube set a
Tarleton career interception record
with 13 and has two this year.
Linebackers Dusty Baker has 39
tackles and Roy Graham has 35
tackles. End Eddie Washington
has 33 tackles with nine sacks and
five tackles for losses.

Last Saturday the Tarleton
State University Texans hit the
road in the hopes of knocking off
ex-TIAA conference rival Austin
College. The outcome was a
miserable 10-7 loss which sets the
Texans season mark at 0-4.
The rivalry that dates back
to 1977 started out just as all the
classic TSU, ACU battles have.
Both teams fighting and clawing
for points. The Kangaroos came
into the game with the number one
defense in NAIA Division II and it
was evident early, they were ready
to play.
However just six minutes
into the game, Texan free safety
Michael Dube came up with his
TSU career record breaking
interception at the Kangaroo 30.
Just two plays later the Texans
struck first with a 29 yard scamper
from Robert Simpson.
Then Austin College
mounted a drive that went 37 yards,
however, Texan defender Cary
Venable came up with a great
interception that stopped the drive.
The offense took over on their own
25 but gave the ball right back
when Derrick Hamilton fumbled on
the first play.
The defense was
challenged once more, yet, they
were able to hold and force a punt.
Early in the second quarter
the Texans were forced to punt
from their own 29 and the outcome
was a blocked Kyle Allred punt.
ACU capitalized with a 17 yard
scoring drive that locked the match
at 7-7.
Late in the third quarter
the Kangaroos struck again with a
19 yard field goal that gave them
all the points they would need.
The contest was plagued
with turnovers from both clubs.
ACU had six turnovers four of
which were interceptions. The
Texans had four turnovers and a
blocked punt.
The Texan offense put up
144 yards rushing on 42 attempts.
Simpson accounted for 81 of the
yards rushing on just 13 attempts.
Quarterback Jimmy Herring
completed just five of 22 attempts
in the air for 80 yards and one
interception.
Defensively the Texans
were strong once more holding the
Kangaroos to just 10 points.
ACU nabbed 213 yards rushing
and 119 in the air. Big play
defense kept them from scoring.
"This team is not bad by
any means," said Texan coach Hal
McAfee. "We are not getting the
breaks we got last year." With a
few breaks this team could
possibly be 3-1."
This week the Texans
take on Eighth ranked NAIA
Division II Southwestern College
at 7:00 p.m. for the Homecoming
Classic.

Cross Country
off and running
By Michael Marbach
Sports Editor
It's nothing but hard
work for the Tarleton Cross
Country team these days. With
their season well under way and
long distances to cover, they are
burning a tr^il toward number
one.
In the first Cross
Country meet of the season the
Texans and TexAnns made their
way to LeTourneau University.
The TexAnns had a great
finish capturing first place. Linda
Garcia led the way for the
TexAnns with a time of 19:57.
She was followed by Tarena
Tumillo, 21:50; Holly Etheredge,
22:00; Stacy McComb, 22:08;
and Stacy Jackson, 22:11.
The Texans finished the
meet with a third place finish and
Javier Garcia leading the way with
an overall second place finish at
27:08. He was followed by
Mariano Barajas 27:27, Tim
Johnson 28:27, Alex Gilmore
30:00, and Eloy Morales with a
31:01.
The team then traveled to
Angelo State and it was there the
Texans captured second. Javier
Garcia once again knocked down a
second place finish with 26:59.
He was followed by Mariano
Barajas with a 27:02, Tim,
Johnson with a 27:58, Brian
Stork's 29:22, Elroy Morales'
29:58, Alex Gilmore's 31:23, and
Brad Wilkerson's 32:22,
The TexAnns finished
fourth with Linda Garcia setting a
TexAnn school record with 19:08.
She broke her record set a year ago
of 19:57.
"I put in a lot more
mileage this past year," Garcia
said. "I am also going after the
field harder." Garcia broke her
previous record in only her second
time out.
Garcia was followed by
Stacy McComb at 20:53, Tarena
Tumillo at 20:58, Holly
Etheredge at 22; 18 and Stacy
Jackson at 22:29.
"The women have a great
chance of winning district this
year," Coach Henry Rosales said.
"We should have both a strong
men and women's teams. We
should be able to take both teams
to nationals and that will be a first
at Tarleton."
The team will return to
action October 4 at North Texas.
The competition will be stiff with
several teams from the Southwest
Conference and some tough junior
colleges participating.
