TSl) nabs first win in
By Michael Marbach
Sports Editor
It took just five weeks, but
the Tarleton State Texans have fi-
nally come together with a win-
ning combination. The combo is
a strong defense and a hard nosed
offense.
Nobody needs reminding,
however, the Texans came into
the Homecoming Classic 0-4.
They not only had to knock off
number eight NAIA nationally
ranked Southwestern College, but
they had to score on a defense that
was only allowing seven points
per game and stop an offense that
had been scoring in excess of 50
points per game.
This was a big challenge for
even the best of teams, yet the un- •
derdog spoilers of TSU met the
demand.
"It was hard to tell with the
people they had been playing how
good they were," said Texan
Coach Hal McAfee. "But there is
no doubt in our minds, we have a
good team. We've been playing
some tough teams and haven't
been able to get the breaks,"
McAfee added.
This week, however, the
Texans seemed to make their own
big breaks.
It was the Texans who drew
first blood in the contest with a
29-yard field goal from Brandon
Johnson. The drive was set up by
Robert Simpson when he rambled
for 11 yards down to the
Southwestern 14. Shortly after
that Johnson put the TSU up 3-0.
Strong defense set up the
next scoring drive. After three
plays the Moundbuilders were
forced to punt.
The offense took over and on
the first play quarterback Jimmy
Hering hit Steve Pinnell for a 29-
yard gain. The drive stalled shortly
after on the Southwestern 16, but
Johnson was able to add three
more to give the Texans a six
point lead.
On the Moundbuilders next
possession they took the first
play from scrimmage 61 yards to
take the leal. But the lead was
short lived as that would be their
only score for the game.
Great defensive play provided
the chance for the Texan offense
to tak6 the victory." On their last
possession before the half,
Hering connected once more with
Pinnell, but this time for an 18-
yard touchdown. The point after
was low, yet the Texans took a
12-7 lead into half.

It was the second half when
the Texans put the icing on the
cake. They took the opening
drive of 64 yards to complete the
scoring at 18-6. Hering hit Ryan
Bailey from five yards for the
score.
The defense sealed the win
with strong play all around.
They only allowed Southwestern
250 total yards, but most impor-
tantly just seven-points. Dusty
and Malachf Millard, were the
standouts on defense. Graham
added his second interception of
the season and Lewis had two
sacks.
Offensively the Texans were
led by Simpson with 71 yards on
