"Tarleton Players & S.P.A.
By Marc Parks
Sports Writer
October 19 in Abilene
was a beautiful afternoon for the
Texans of Tarleton State as they
crushed the Hardin-Simmons
Cowboys 35-0. Each aspect of
the Texan football team seemed
to jell as they rambled for the
huge one-sided victory,
"They (Hardin-
Simmons) played well at the
start, but our explosion in the
second quarter really hurt them,"
said Texan coach Hal McAfee.
After having a field goal
attempt blocked on their first
drive, TSU reponded by blocking
a Cowboy punt which gave the
Texans great field position at the
Hardin-Simmons 23, Four plays
later the Texans faked their
second field goal attempt and
Texan Steve Pinnell found Fred
Ortiz wide open for a 20-yard
touchdown pass. Tarleton's kick
attempt was blocked, but six
points still decorated the
scoreboard.
It was the Texan defense
that took over at this point. Roy
Graham and Randy Read led the
defensive charge as Texans did
not allow the Cowboys to cross
into Tarleton soil the entire first
half.
An evenly balanced
offensive attack shreaded the
Cowboys defense, putting the
game out of reach by halftime.
An offensive explosion of more
than 300 firsthalf yards increased
the lead to 28-0
A 34-yard pass from
Jimmy Heriiig to Pinnell was the
second TSU score, while the
ground game with one- and two-
yard touchdown rushes by Robert
Simpson and Lonzo Anderson
completed the TSU first half
slaughter.
The second half proved
'to be much of the same for the
Texans as they took their first
drive 77 yards for the final score
of the game. A Simpson
scamper of 3 yards pushed the
score to 35-0.
From there Tarleton
substituted at random as four
TSU quarterbacks saw action.
The Texans now have
their eyes set on Midwestern
State and a chance to become the
best of Texas in NAIA Division
II.
"If we beat Midwestern,'
we will start to get some votes
and start looking back at the top
25 nationally," said McAfee.
Offensively the Texans
were led by Pinnell with a
touchdown pass and touchdown
reception. Quarterback Jimmy
Hering also had a big game
completing nine of 16 passes for
131 yards with one touchdown
and he also rushed for 118 yards.
Defensively, the Texans
were led by Dusty Baker with
five assisted tackles and two
interceptions. He was followed
by Cary Venable with three
tackles, six assists and one
quarterback sack.
Total offense for the
Texans came out to a whopping
444 yards of total offense 263
rushing and 181 passing.
Defensively, the Texans held
Midwestern to 250 total yards
without a score.
Coming off three big
victories and having this week
off should prove to be a huge
boost for the Texans in next
week's game against Midwestern.
The Texans are now 3-4 on the
season with three games
remaining. The game against
Midwestern will be another
strong test for the Texans as the
Indians are undefeated in TIAA
confernce play and overall just
showing two losses.

The TexAnns volleyball team is
10-1 in District vm, which creates a
two-way tie between the TexAnns
and Sul Ross. The first time the two
teams met this year Sul Ross pulled
away with the victory, however, the
two team? will meet again Novem-
ber 2, at Wisdom Gymnasium.
Last Thursday the TexAnns
traveled to Brownwood and defeated
Howard-Payne in four games, 15-
12, 15-13, 13-15 and 15-11.
Leading the way for the Tex-
Anns offensively was Kim Franklin
and Ariglea Spradley. Franklin ended
the match hitting an attack percent-
age of .333 while Spradley contrib-
uted .474.
On the defensive end, Gina
Markin dug up 21 digs and Franklin
added 28 to combine for 49 digs of a
team total 114,
Although' the TexAnns lost the
third game; a> number* of freshmen
got playing time. Keri Bentrup,
' Amiee Hranicky and Jennifer Bobo
all did an excellent job.
Today, the TexAnns were sup-
posed ID play against Texas College,
however, Texas College forefitted
the match.
Instead, the TexAnns will play
this Saturday against Austin College
in Sherman at 11 am.
For the season the TexAnns
move to 10-1 in district play and 11-
7 overall.
"I'm looking forward to the
matches against Lubbock Christian
and Sul Ross and I know the girls are
too, It Will be a big test btit'I feel we
will be ready to play,1' sakl TexAnn
Coach Larry Blackwell.'
The season has gone well for the
, TexAnns despite a year ago getting
upset in the playoffs by Howard
Payne. This year the ball Is on the
TexAnns side of the court and they
' are ready for the kill.
