TSU Tex Anns ranked
seventh in National poll
Sports Information
TSUs women's basket-
ball team is ranked seventh in the
NAIA Division II Women's
Basketball pre-season poll.
The rankings are based
on votes received from the NAIA
DMsion II women's basketball
rating committee.
The TexAnn's return all
five starters to a team that finished
last year with a 21-9 record and
District VIII runners-up to
Wayland Baptist (now Division I).
Tarleton received votes in the final
poll released last year which in-
cluded teams from all divisions.
This is the first year that the
NAIA has split into divisions of
competition in basketball.
Basketball teams to give
sneak preview Saturday
Sports Information
Tarleton State University's men's
and women's basketball teams
will be having a "sneak preview"
intersquad scrimmage open free to
the public on October 26.
The women's team,
ranked seventh in the NAIA
Division II pre-season poll, will
scrimmage at 6 p.m. The men's
team, ranked 25th in the NAIA
Division II pre-season poll, will
scrimmage at 8 p.m.
"We thought this would
be an excellent way to introduce
the teams to the Tarleton students
and Stephenville community,"
said Lonn Reisman, head men's
coach. "October 26 is an open
date for the football team so it
seemed a natural time to have the
scrimmage."
Both the women and the
men will split into a purple squad
and a white squad for the scrim-
mage.
"This will be an
excellent way for both Jan
(women's coach Lowrey) and I to
get a fame-type scrimmage in and
to generate some excitement for
the season ahead," Reisman said.
The Texans open the sea-
son at home on November 11
playing Concordia College of
Nebraska, a team that made it to
the national championships last
year.
The Tex Anns open this
season on the road at Ambassador
College on November 12.
The scrimmages will
take place at Wisdom
Gymnasium.

Anticipation, excitement,
or is it "Buck Fever'
By Michael Marbach
Texas Brush Buster
I just can't stand it anymore.
The anticipation is killing me. I been
through it before, but this time I
know it's different This is going to
be the year. The cold chills, the early
morning sun rises, the late evening
sun sets, the challenge of the hunt
I know deer season has already
startded, but I just can't wait for
November 2,1991. It's then the real
hunting gets started for me. The
challenge of bow season has only
enhanced the anxiety of grabbing
that old 30-06 and heading into the
cold crisp morning.
The real fact is I just love hunt-
ing as I know most of you do. The
thrill of the hunt, the camp time
comradery, the stories, die legends.
Man, do I have it bad. It's like a
drug, a bad drug. I know it's getting
to me, I'm a junky.
Opening morning is rounding
the corner, and a big buck is just
across the next ridge. Do I take the
shot or do I wait? How can I get rid
of this buck fever? Is he big enough?
Is he the buck of a lifetime?
It kinda reminds me of and old
story my grandaddy passed on to me
a few years back.
Il seems a hunter went into the
thick brush country of south Texas.
He was a young hunter, an excited
hunter. Let me tell you he had it bad.
All he wanted was a crack at a big
buck. And he got it
When my grandfather went to
big up the young man he was sitting
under his deer stand shaking his head.
His claim was that he shot at a big
buck. Only my grandfather said he
never heard a shot. The gun was
never fired, but if you would of asked
the young hunter he would of swore
he had discharged his weapon until
empty.
But as the story goes the gun
was never fired. He had that old
fever bad. His excitement got the
best of him and he never fired a shot
You may have heard a story
similar, but that one really grabbed
me. The reason being is just a few
years back something similar hap-
pened to me.
It was late December and the rut
was in full swing on the ranch we
were hunting and a good number of
large bucks had been spotted.
I took out about 3:00 p.m. and
the excitement had me that day. Not
long after I had gotten into my stand
* «. ■,
This particular deer blind is located near Opossum King-
dom lake. The hunter probably suffered one of those cases
of extreme buck fever. Photo by Michael Marbach
I spotted a huge whitetail about 300
yards away. I first picked up my
binoculars, like a dummy. Heck
anyone could have seen the wide,
high rack with the naked eye. But it
didn't take me long to realize this
was the one I wanted. I proceeded to
shoot and shoot Seven times to be
exact, not even touching a hair.
Tlie only difference to this stay
is that I did fire the gun, alot But not
one shot even hit close to the old
buck.
I had the fever so bad I don't
think I could of even hit an elephant
How do you beat that old buck
fever? Well, the answer is you don't
Tliat's what gives us Ihe thrill of the
hunt.
If you ever stop getting it, it's
time to hang it up. If you can't get
excited about taking a large deer, the
thrill is over.
I know you've heard it before.
Some old guy tells you he never gets
the fever. But I got news for you. He
does. And the reason he probably
doesn't admit it is because he gets it
bad, real bad.
Go out this year and have a good
time. Rember the thrill of the hunt
and the excitement It only last a few
seconds and what a rush it is.
Good luck and good hunting.
