•ffffS TexAnns ready for 1991-9.2 season
H
iSllii:,.
The Tex Anns of Tarleton State will enter the new season
ranked seventh nationally in NAIA division II.
Sports Information
When you start out the season
ranked number seven in the nation
in the NAIA Division II poll, you'd
better have some darn good reason
to justify it. The TexAnns do.
Tarleton hasn't been this rich
in talent since the team last made
the national play-offs' in 1984.
Coach Jan Lowrey expects this
team to make a national play-off
trip as well. Lowrey's optimism,
and the reason for the national
ranking, stem from three sources.
First, all five starters return
from last year's 21-9 season that
saw the TexAnns one step away
from the national play-offs.
Second, the TexAnns appear to
have all the right pieces to make
their offensive engine roar. Third,
the team appears to have the right
chemistry to make it run smoothly.
"We've got seven returning
players who really worked well
together last year," Lowrey says.
"We've got shooters with good
range and we've picked up two or
three new players who can score.
More importantly, we've added the
size that was missing the last
several years."
"We will be an explosive, fast-
paced and high-scoring team on
offense. We've got the size to get
the extra rebounds to help us run
even more. Defensively, we now
have some bangers underneath and
our improved depth means we can
play relentless, full-court pressure
without having to get so concerned
about fouls."
Making the TexAnn running
game go will be a dynamic guard
duo that Lowrey considers the best
in the game on the NAIA Division
II level. Julie Mata will handle the
point and Kristin Curtis will be at
the off-guard.
Mata (formally Foster) may be
the most prolific passer in the
nation. She averaged almost 7.5
assists a game last year, almost
matching her scoring average. She
was also just one three-point field
goal away from shooting 50
percent from that range. Lowrey
considers Mata the perfect point
guard for the offense the TexAnns
run. Her only drawback is a
tendency to turn the ball over by
trying to do too much.
Curtis, who has been getting
more practice at the point to give
Mata some relief, is coming off an
all-America season. She set an
NAIA single game record last year
with 14 steals in one game and is
unexcelled on defense. Her 13.3
points a game was second on the
team and she also managed to shoot
48 percent from the field.
Newcomers who could help at
guard, include freshman Rachel
Torres (5' 6", Kaufman) and junior
transfers Angie Gentry (5'8",
Gunter) and Tina Vestal (5'3",
Clovis NM). Vestal is awaiting
special clearance from the NAIA in
order to be eligible to play. She
spent much of last year
rehabilitating from a car accident
that left her temporarily paralyzed.
Also rolling into the guard
position is senior Helena Smith
(5'10, Houston Hastings), who
begins her junior year with a
summer of weight-lifting behind
her. Stronger and more intense this
season, senior Karla Dick will be
looking to improve on her team
leading 7.1 rebounds a game, as
well as her 9.7 scoring average.
She is probably the most unique
player on the team because of her
ability to play any position on the
court.
The fifth returning starter for
the TexAnns is junior Tina Tibbs
(5'1Q", Los Angeles CA). Tibbs
averaged 12 points a game while
shooting 50 percent from the field.
Tibbs has tremendous leaping
ability and can make things happen
on either end of the court. Used
primarily at the post last year,
Tibbs will get more time at forward
where her athletic ability will come
more to the fore.
Two freshmen who could see
significant minutes at the forward
spots are Leanna Stockdale
(5'8" Jacksborto) and Meme Oliver
(5'9" Galveston Ball). Lowrey
praises both players for their
physical abilities and says both
players will have bright futures at
TSU to host junior college tourney
Sports Information
Tarleton State University's
women's basketball team will be
hosting the second annual TexAnn
Junior College Tournament Novem-
ber 4-5 with four of the best Texas
junior college women's basketball
teams in competition.
Defending national junior col-
lege champion Odessa College, na-
tionally-ranked South Plains College
and Blinn College and' a tough Pianola
College teiurt' wiir o^prisS' t^ llekl.
The schedule has Panola play-
ing South Plains at 6 pjn. on Mon-
day, followed at 8 p.m. by Blinn
against Odessa. Tuesday at 6 p.m.
. Odessa will play Panola and at 8
p.m. South Plains will play Blinn.
"This will be an opportunity i'or
area basketball fans to see the best
state junior college competition," Jan
Lowrey, Tarleton women's coach
saiit" "ffs'also an opportunity jfcr us
' td' make some contacts arid shovv off
Tarleton." "
Each team has at least two play-
eis at 6' 0" or taller and there are 12
players altogether cm the four teams
at that lofty height All four teams
are relatively young with just 15
sophomores among 54 players in the
tournament.
In addition to playing in the
tournament, coaches from Odessa
and South Plains will be speaking to
two physical education classes at
Tarleton on Tuesday morning.
Tarleton.
Two other freshman will get
chances to start at the post. Kaelie
Butler (6'3", Odessa Permian) and
Eleanor Golding (6'0, Copperas
Cove) give the team the size and
physical strength that they need in
order to make the rest of the offense
go into high gear. Butler has the
size to control the boards and is
improving steadily on offense. She
handles the ball better than expected
for boards. She's a lefty with a
good shot and will intimidate in the
paint area.
While Lowrey frets some
about the fact that she plans to play
two freshman a lot at post, she
knows there are enough players she
can move around to fill any
problems that might come up.
Two returning players who offer
support are junior Sheri Murphey
(6"0", Texhoma) and sophomore
Niki Young (5'9", Palmer).
Murphey should make
improvement after coming off a
second knee surgery while Young
is a hard-worker who is improving
steadily. Both will be role players
and both are excellent leaders.
Lowrey says that Tarleton's
schedule is rugged, especially the
November-December portion. She
hopes that will toughen the team
for the play-off stretch. And there
are some darn good reasons to
believe the TexAnns will be in the
national play-off picture at the end
of the year.
Cross country district meet set for Saturday
Sports Information
Tarleton State University will
be the host institution for the 1991
NAIA District VIII men's and
women's cross country champion-
ship meet.
The meet will be November 2
with the start and finish at Stephen-
ville City Park (378 West Long
Street).
Seven runners are allowed per
team with the top five finishers on
each team counting toward team
scoring. The top seven runners
overall in both men's and women's
division are named to the all-District
team.
Team champions advance to the
NAIA National Championships.
Because Lubbock Christian Univer-
sity, ranked number one in the NAIA
cross country poll, is the defending
national champion, District VHI will
be allowed to send two men's teams
(first and second place) to the na-
tional meet
